Well, I've seen PICTURES of armadillos. They DO look kinda weird.

I did a little internet research.

Their range in the USA has been steadily expanding over the last hundred years, and biologists can't explain it.

They don't swim well, so the western rivers are a huge barrier to armadillo expansion.

The armadillo presence in Florida is due to escapees from a small zoo in 1924, and two additional escapees from a traveling circus in 1936.

There have been armadillo sightings in Illinois. The armadillos got there by.......STOWING AWAY ON CATTLE CARS BOUND FOR CHICAGO, in the early 20th century.

Biologists estimate armadillos will make it to Canada within the next hundred years.

TL/DR: The armadillos are coming. Seek shelter NOW!

And yet the "biologist" quoted in the article I read didn't seem to know that, asserting, in fact, that "armadillos can swim, but not very well".

So Joe Armadillo walks several miles upriver, floats his buoyant self across the Mississippi, hops a railcar, and by lunchtime he's chilling at the Legacy Pancake House in downtown Dayton, tucking in to a double order, and asking the staff where in town can an armadillo get some "action".

I watched one of those nature shows about the Mississippi River. They do in fact float across it. I’m not sure about the rest of it. I know one got scattered, smothered, covered, diced and chunked by an alligator.

Actually

armadillo can swim and like to swim. They have a special ability to create a ballast of air in their body that allow them float.

Another fun fact about armadillos is when they cross highways and are about to get hit they jump in a defensive move against predators and that is what gets them killed. Most trucks and cars would just pass over them but they jump up and get hit by the bumper.

I'm guessing that getting out of the way just isn't part of their survival tool box.
