The 318's made great fuel to smoke generators. I took one of those, a bobtail water truck, to pick up a load of fresh water going to a drilling rig. I came out onto the highway going uphill and was pouring smoke real good when a deputy dog pulled me over. He asked what he just caught me doing and climbed up on top and looked in the tank. He came back down and asked why it was smoking so much. I explained that it had a 318 detroit which meant it had no turbo. I showed him the unit number and told him that if he sees that truck, nobody is going to over load it, because then they would be hard pressed to get it to move at all. Fun times in the oil patch.
