On the dockworkers strike, not sure if memory is exact....
Hauling Hi-d bale cotton into the NO docks in 1955...Get in, on the wharf, be untying the tarp. Lotta hollering and movement as a group would gather in a circle
around a man. He would talk, point, and it break up with a few staying to follow him away.

Found out what it was, called a "shape up". Like a foreman needed say 8 hands to fill/empty a cargo net. He come out and hollers. Loiterers swarm. He selects 8 by pointing. They go with him to start work, remainders settle till next call. The most interesting feature...
All who gathered, but were not selected, were paid $14.00 for "shaping up."
That used to puzzle me.. but it has not for a long time now...

Many Dockworkers Make $150,000 or More. Why They’re Going on Strike.

Thousands of dockworkers walked off their jobs at ports on the East and Gulf coasts after midnight Monday when their current contract was set to expire, as negotiations with port employers for a new labor contract reached an impasse.

Port workers earn some of the highest wages among blue-collar workers. Under the current contract with the East Coast union, a top-scale longshoreman could earn up to $39 an hour, which translates to about $81,000 a year. But many workers take overtime and extra shifts that have higher rates.

Neither the union nor the ports have disclosed exact pay levels. But according to a 2020 report by the Waterfront Commission, the regulator that oversees New York Harbor, more than half of the longshoremen based there made $150,000 or more, including overtime.

The 47,000 dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association are asking for higher pay, claiming that “ocean carriers’ profits skyrocketed from millions to mega-billion dollars, while ILA longshore wages remained flat.”
