But regardless, a handgun needs to be in a somewhat controllable caliber, which isn’t going to be effective against an apex predator. For that, I want a rifle. 8MM Mauser in 196 GR should be enough to persuade a grizzly to seek sustenance elsewhere.

Seems like a light round , 325grn 454 hard cast for mucho penetration for bear or the like . Buffalo bore might make a .460 thats heavy.
