I learned on a one piece, almost fitted for the loads. 34 ft flat, 60 bales compressed cotton upright on floor. 3 x 20.
3 bales parallel on top at very rear. Most load orders were 65 to 70 bales. 60 on floor, 3 up at rear, put the other 7
crossways up toward the front. Secured with 3 chains. 1 hooked in rail above front tandem, around front of load to same on other side. 2nd chain hooked in rail above landing gear around back to same other side. 3rd from one rail up over the three parallel bales down to other side. 4 binders, 1 in each chain and 4th to use on back chain to continue to tighten, You stood on tanks to start, holding the looped chain chest high till the clamp truck bought the 1st three bales up and rammed them tight.
Now the tarp is folded from last load. Clamp truck takes if off and sets aside. Then he loads you and you chain as he does.
Then he clamps the tarp and sets it up on the top back bales.
Now the job. You crawl up and unroll it from back to front, dropping the side, and end flaps down. Shinny down and fasten the hanging 1/4 inch rope tie down on the back flap in under the sides and to the rail. then work both sides down. Last, spread the front flap around for a nose cone and fasten it. Nice formed load. Front - back chains keep it positioned, cross chain snugs it down, and the tarp holds the whole thing together. Direct your loader to keep straight sides on it and you can see as well as a
van thru your mirrors. Never get that tarp on the ground unless a forklift is there. Old days, no such things as bungees. Used 1/4 inch sisal rope. .Load in MS Delta, hot dry. Run B'ham, Atlanta, Greenville to Gastonia or Danville in several rains. Try to get the shrunken knots out of the tiedowns. Tarp was that good heavy canvas made by MaHaffey Bros Tent and Awning in Mphs, TN.
For fun, come back to Bessemer AL and load bagged Basic Slag (cheap fertilizer). load 320 bags, set tarp on back and unroll forward. Lift and tuck flaps under, leaving just a covering Tie down and roll.
To haul bagged cement (had to stay dry) you unrolled the tarp, letting all flaps hang odd. Cement and some bagged seeds were loaded with hand trucks, did not hurt that tough old tarp to roll on it. loaded on, then drag rear flap in and flatten. pull side flaps up and over lap and tie together, Brings front flap back over for a nose cone, tie down and roll. Had a nice dry package.
Ah, being young, strong, and driving a truck....
