Highest on my list are Mack, Kenworth, and Peterbilt. Preferrably a pre-Volvo Mack with all Mack componentry on it. But, at the end of the day, if the paycheck is getting signed and clearing at the bank, I don't really care what name is on the hood, I'll drive it.
The point is after 2 years in our service , no matter the brand it would have about 730,000 miles on the clock , would squeak and raise a fuss. Few hours with some felt and a drill driver it's quiet ! The alm frames would not rust then start to fatigue . The cabs did not rust. Built quality we could over come but the way we specked those freightliners . There was not match. Other brands didn't offer all alm trucks. Miles and time killed. Would our trucks been right choice for every job ? No! But just because it has a name on it (red oval , or not) , did not mean it was specked correct for the job at hand! Up till few years ago you get any drive line you wanted in what ever truck you wanted! Frame thickness , steel or not. Think about what company makes the most mixer trucks, fire engines, etc.
I love my 379!!! I've driven many others and always like the PACCAR brand. I will say an older Mack is tough, I wrecked my R series when I got hit head on and it rolled over, the doors still opened and closed like nothing happened. I could sell my Pete right now for what I paid for it 3 years ago. I'vew had dealers pass me on the road, search my company out and call me wanting me to come and trade it in. I tell them "NO"!!!!!! Park the same year/same spec'd, same milage Freightliner and Pete side by side and see what you get in resale for them....
Resale is never a factor when buying a truck. I don't buy a truck to sell it, I buy to work it. When it does come to finally selling, then the price of scrap metal comes in. BTW, scrap metal is worth more than scrap fiberglass and plastic.
I've owned 2 Pete's and 2 k dubs. Pete's are better looking (only if it has a hood). They are lighter, have a better HVAC system, and have more leg room cause the floor doesnt slope up and a 45 deg angle. Outside of that, KW builds a better truck. If the government makes me drive an aero truck, T660's are easy on the eyes. If I bought new today, 389. My first truck was a 93 KW bought in 1997 for $61000 sold in 2006 for $50000 can't beat paccar for resale.
I have only been driving 20 months. I have only driven two company Freightliners and a Volvo. So I can not reply comment. But I do agree with the quoted statement in the way that they are both obnoxiously loud. If I am spending 8-11 hours in the cab I want to hear my music or talk radio or nothing. Not straight pipes. And I don't want to hear "loud pipes save lives" either. Mikeeee
Loud pipes saves lives Jesus saves souls peterbilt379ex is by far the best truck out there followed by the w900 I've driven them all to me all the new trucks suck as far as lasting long got to give the older western star s a mention.as far as freightshakers there's a reason there called that and volvos and internationals are garbage and the old macks there tough but have no pulling power
