Safe to assume this is just a guessing game and nobody has ever heard this rattle I’m talking about? Sounds like it’s either idler gear or balancer. Too low on motor imo to be idler gear though.

Don't listen to those that say the c12 is junk ...my fleet had some that went well over a million miles before an overhaul .

I think that guy just likes the big blocks. If I had my choice when buying I would have went with one. I do know that the c12 is a million mile motor if serviced. Like I said, I run with a few guys that have well over 500k on them without an overhaul yet. Mine was overhauled very early in its life for whatever reason. When I called cat with the vin, they told me that there was problems with the piston squirts or something and my motor had a full rebuilt with the revised squirts along with everything else. New head, injectors, etc etc. complete rebuild. It went into the shop becuase they said the right up said the coolant system was pressurized

No adjustment on gear train on C-12. Vibration damper is only good for 500,000. The silicone gets hard over time. With belt off, you are still driving the air compressor, p/s pump, water pump and oil pump up front. Most noise issues I have had with C-12 is top end. Rockers and shafts tend to wear out. When is last time you run an overhead?

Thanks for this reply man. This is the same thing my other mechanic told me. Had the overhead adjusted back in the fall. This rattle coming from damper area. But obviously I can’t put my stethoscope on that while running. I scoped everywhere else on the front and couldn’t find the source except for the dampner

I have overhauled quite a few C-12 and C13 in dump trucks, and I always replace the damper. It is cheap insurance.

They make many OEM dampers. Cat started sourcing some of theirs from China. These are 100% made in USA. Your call on where you source your parts.

SAR and Cam Roberts Thank this.
