Hi. What part Fl? Where buy your truck? Florida Also. I been researching (SMARTLY) of becoming an O/O with Own Authority. Been working on this for several weeks. It's a lot of work. So far I been lucky and researched every option = Company driver, Leased driver, Lease Purchase etc..... NOW here's the TICKER!!! Past 7 years been off road to take care elderly parents. Before that I have driven EVERYTHING from Flatbed, Lowboy, permit, Heavy Loads, Reefer off and on for over 13 years. I have a PERFECT ( NOT a single ticket, dui/dwi, parking ticket or anything) ( KNOCK ON WOOD) Spotless CDL A with Triples and Passenger Endorsements and cause i been out 7 years. ALLLLL Companies looking for exactly what u are cause INSURANCE COMPANIES RUN THIS WORLD. It's not the companies. Their insurance making be treated like a kid coming out of driving school. And cause of that and my ego I will NOT go thru any school. ( would for a week refresher and driving test) but NO WAY Months and with Trainer younger and newer than me as my trainer. And as I told you this is why I'm buying a truck, Getting own Authority and working for myself cause then the insurance company looks at how long I've had CDL and not recent experience. After research past 2 weeks this is facts. And far as loads prices you being in Florida otta know if you get a load out to get near Jax. Or Atlanta that pays your fuel your lucky, Unless know someone shipping. Like me take info on here with grain of salt. MOST have been nice and have a lot of info but as i have learned already they ( O/O on here) Not helping and disclosing good load boards or brokers to deal with and load averages cause their afraid you will steal their gravy rains. As I also be in same shoes as you and learning on own. Do what I do. Yesterday I went to walmart. Talked seperatly to 3 different O/O 's. Also live near a Pilot. Asked some coming thru there questions. RESEARCH!RESEARCH!RESEARCH!... It at least guide you in a starting direction.... I wish you and ALL safety and Happiness and Making the $$$ .

I know a guy in NY who has had his CDL since 1980.He worked in the office and the docks for years now and decided to go out and be a trucker again...

He ran into this very same issue that you have..He told them all to go to hell and got his own truck and trailer. He then got his own AUTH and now drives for himself..

    It can be done..

EXACTLY!!! Companies wont hire ya except for school but you can go become O/O with own authority. And thats exactly why I'm doing this. I know I will and can make it as I'm single and daughter almost out of college and moving on I have no reason to rush home. As in past I stayed out Months at a time. For that reason alone I know I can succeed. Plus I never did or got any habits such as casinos, drinking etc..... I do that when home. I run when working. I been doing research slowly for 2 weeks and actually surprised it's working out better than I thought. So far still moving forward. Twic,Authority paperwork done. Still working out insurance/banking stuff. Truck search later as many out there.

Trying to decide weather to buy a Reefer Trailer or not. Used/ New etc. brand, approx. price? where to buy? T/K I assume as I used them years ago and all around for service.? As you see I'm doing everything way before searching for truck/trailers. Where the loads O/O's? Reefer/Frozen. It worth hauling reefer? Those the things I still researching.

I'm definitely joining either way. Just getting as much info as possible and mixing in a bowl and seeing what majority says. Luckily I'm in no hurry except excited as heck to get back out there.

You have a lot to learn grasshopper. Mom and pops pay more and big shippers pay less. Exactly the opposite of what you think. Where are you going to get a million dollar cargo policy to ensure that million dollar load? Most of your loads will be broker freight in the beginning and your contract rates will mean nothing to them. Most guys with their own authority make less than good leased operators. One guy and a truck isn't going match a sales force of a thousand agents. While I think your end goal is very doable, your expectations are unrealistic and your lack of industry knowledge is glaring. Keep reading and good luck. BTW, 2.11 per odometer mile for last two years leased to Landstar, and I rarely leave my state except when I need to make big money.

Most custumers i have ever loaded for/delivered to in 7 years as an o/o have had me asking questions about who to contact for freight.
I constantly craved knowledge of this business and thats what i would recommend doing. You can really talk to the small shippers well most of the time and at least get a name and number for the freight.

If you are going to go independent find out who the broker is and if the shipper is in a contract with the broker for all freight or not.
You may be able to go around the broker and grab a few extra bucks on the same load. BUT if you use the broker under your own authority they(the broker) can sue you. Find this crap out before going independent. I have pulled this magic trick myself here and there.

GET OTHER PEOPLES HANDS OUT OF YOUR POT!!! unless you dont want to fight or give your family a better life.

I am leased. No factoring, no dot audits, no maintenance on the trailer,no liability insurance out of my pocket, dont have to look for loads, fuel card, discount on parts and labor...
If I get 2 dollars a mile after company's cut I'm better off than the independent guy with the same rate.

Somebody will always make a buck of the truckers hard work no matter what.
