December, January , February and March the rates were Solid for the lanes I had JJ running and I haven't noticed a drop in rates this month.
The average rate is down four cents from its first-quarter peak of $2.10 per mile. April is really a moderating month, said DAT industry analyst Mark Montague. Spot market rates are coming down in places like Buffalo, N.Y.; Columbus, Ohio; and Chicago, pretty much across the north of the U.S. as winter finally recedes, Montague said. Spot rates rose 7.6 percent in the first quarter as shippers turned more to the spot market for capacity as their contract trucking partners were slowed by storms. Shippers are getting a little breather in April, Montague said, as freight backlogs are cleared. But that respite wont last long, and wont keep carriers from pushing for higher contract rates. Spot market van rates are still 21.7 percent higher than a year ago, Montague said. He expects spot rates to resume climbing as freight demand rises and contract rates move higher. We see trucking capacity as tight, and its a long term change, he said. Hang onto your seats, because it could get pretty intense by the end of May and into June.
I took 4 days off last week. It wasn't worth going out for what I could get. Proof of why we all need rainy day accounts. The wife loved the unexpected time home, but I'm glad my dedicated run has me out this week, the right foot was getting itchy.
I was getting really good rates from Chicago,IL to Boston Ma 3+ a mile until the last week of April, but now it has dropped well below the 3 dollars range and there are not many loads out there like before. what gives?
