Here's my two cents(cha-ching!) I worked for Central Ref and loved it! They have a yard in Phoenix and lots of customers in the area. That will make getting to the house a little easier. Any company regardless is going to want you 4-6 weeks out. Don't fall for the recruiters crap. Lies, lies, lies. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear! Make yourself a checklist of your wants and needs and start coming through these companies websites. They have their criteria and what they have to offer right there. Find yourself a company that is going to best suit you. Narrow it down to a few and then start looking through this site and maybe asking some of the experienced drivers about particular companies. Also scan through some of the driver threads and check out their everyday life. Hope this helps. Welcome to the forum and good luck to you!
Chompi... I looked at Central's website and it looked like they didn't take students, unless they trained them...but I will check it out some more.... I did apply with Gordon today....looks like a western states gig....they say 10-14 days out but of course I do not believe it....something always will come up and will have to take another load somewhere else... I am on here several times a day reading as much as I can....I know its gonna be hard anyways but why make it harder!!!! Just concerned I will be taken advantage of (ie not enough miles, etc) I know as a trainee there are things you just have to put up with..but that's with any job.. I appreciate all the advice....
Keep in mind, the companies where you have to put a little more effort into getting hired are the ones that are going to be worth it. Also the companies that aren't advertising are the ones that don't have high driver turnover rates. This in turn means their drivers are happier working for them.
H.O. Wolding is running thru Az. They did have a drop lot or something in Flagstaff a while back. McKelvey, Ruan, Tru-Line, Bjorn Petersen, May, SLT, plus others have yards in Phx.
I could give you the local companies, but your located in AZ, I'm in WA. Check out your local area. If you want local jobs, look into dump truck, fueling companies, etc. Also check into hauling cans (intermodal rail cans). Check out the biggies in your area such as Swift, Scnider (I can't ever spell that right!) and see if they have a regional fleet. That way your home for your 34's, and maybe once a week more. Since you're in the SW, you might try to find a company working "Western 11" states, such as Gordon trucking. I believe TWT (Spokane WA based) runs reefers into AZ. Hope that helps a bit.
I don't know of anyone who actually has not been paid what they're owed. Yes, I've heard or read people say they've heard of a guy who knows a guy who heard a guy say he didn't get paid. But then......is it true or just gossip? I don't even see how the company could possibly not pay you. Loads are planned, trip planned to you by qualcom, dispatched by qualcom and you qualcom at every stop. So there is a record. You simply keep a watch. As far as the "contract". Anytime you have a loan with anyone you sign a contract to pay it. The contract with Swift is no different. It isn't a contract to work.....it's a contract to pay back the loan and the convenience of it being by payroll deduction. If you wish to leave......leave......but you'll still owe the loan. You'd owe the loan to anyone who loaned you money. What else can I answer for you?
