You need to ask about a specific area my dump trucks work 80% within a 30 mile radius and never outside of 60 miles. I have been working with the same family owned companys for as long as 30 years its going to take a noobie a long time to establish a working relationship and prove that you will not try and steel a good customer and that you are dependable, you may be the only truck working for a concrator on a given day and if you don't show the whole job is screwed. This is not like OTR trucking we work for the same people all the time most of our work is done for about 20 companies. The other thing that is not apparent from the outside looking in is that we don't all haul the same thing I almost never haul Asphalt any more and only if I'm hired direct by a contractor hourly I did not make enough hauling Asphalt by the ton and having to wait 30 minutes before charging stand by witch was about 25% of my income, I also don't haul much sand, rock or base mostly dirt and demo, You need to talk with people in your area and the most important question is not who to haul for it is WHO to NOT haul for we all know who the lowball no pay companies are in the local market. You will have to also consider that in the time I have been in this business I have seen 100's of companies come and go some with 1 truck some come in with many more its a tough business.
