Well I think everyone has a little different idea but before I started I really researched detention. And several people said a few things that made a lot of sense.

First of all if you get a good enough rate for the load even if you sat for a couple of hours and got nothing it's worked into the load. But you're getting something you're not getting nothing.

The next thing was that you might not even have to go into detention. So here you are trying to find a good paying load now you found it and now you're going to argue over something that may not even happen and possibly lose it. Then you have to look for another load and maybe you'll find one that doesn't pay as well as that one but again you're going to sit and fight over something that may not even happen and maybe you lose that one. That's no way to make money.

Now with a new broker it's always a good idea to ask them what their policy says so that there's no surprises.

The only thing that really bothers me is when I find a broker that doesn't want to pay detention until after 3 hours or broker that pays some minimal amount of money for tonu, like he wants to pay $100 or less.

I usually tell them to stick it- but if there's enough money in the load and you're not going far to deadhead or at least you're in an area where there is a lot of loads then it's okay.

I pull an RGN and I never ask for detention mainly because I pull for 2 customers and I know what to expect with the machines. However, my asking about detention is usually after the fact rather than prior to accepting a load.

That may be true on van but, not so much on a flatbed or RGN. Especially once you get into oversize load projects

I was on a rejected pineapple load for a week post delivery. If that load had a no detention provision, I would have been out a week of hauling.

Detention is for that rare load where you get screwed or deliver to us foods and it takes them 14 hours to unload you.

I don’t bother with any it. I just figure it into my rate and move on. I will go after them for detention if it occurs even if their policy is complete bs, as most are.

I started on osl and 13 axle. Detention was an afterthought because all detention was on me, and my own #### fault. That's not a reefer or a dry van with them unloading you.

You got to do what you got to do. If you are hauling refrigerated that's a whole other animal there.

Like I said you need to ask the broker with the policy is. If you're going somewhere that you know you're going to get a lot of detention then you need to find out ahead of time what that is. I know the Brokers I work with I know what they're going to do.

I had one load that I can't even remember what happened but I got detained at the shipper and at some other point I had to load on the truck and they couldn't unload it and I ended up holding it for a week and they paid me the detention they paid me the whole thing that was a great week. My truck sat all week and I got paid well.

Why should he ask for the broker's policy? He's the carrier. He has his own business to run. If he lets brokers dictate his business model he'll be losing his investments. It's a free market and any carrier allowing an opposing business dictate his operation will surely be used and abused into bankruptcy or driver status with worn out equipment.

I run from loads like that unless it can pay me for two days for one day running.

Yep, I rarely even need it. Past 3 years ive had detention(or had to ask for it) 1 time. I went to deliver a dump truck at Savannah port and they wouldn't take it because of dirt/trash in the bed. I ended up waiting 5 hours to be told what to do with it, and was paid $600.
