Please don't forget about their catch phrases that they use constantly to "attract" drivers. Phrases like sign on bonus, longevity bonus, recruitment bonus, NY city bonus, hell, any other bonus. Potential is another big one. You have the potential to make X amount of money. Yes you can make X amount of money if you want to stay out for weeks/months at a time. I hope they are single with no loved ones waiting for them at home. I forgot. How much money does it take to live on the road?
Heres a new euphemism to be very afraid of. Associate! That word is meant to make you "feel" like you are an important asset to the company. You're not. You are just a number that generates income for the company. Nothing more, nothing less. A neccessary evil. Associate, a new word that means absolutely nothing! Unless it somehow makes you "feel" better.

I had to go out of the way to get to some of their yards without getting paid for it or run out of fuel. as far as fcfs in the shops I understand that but im not going to lose money by sitting in a line for several hrs wtng for an inspection -

they will use you in anyway to benifit theirselves and not you
most of all they will lie and promise you things then they get a senior moment and guess what they never said what you thought they said at least that"s the way they act
you really need to give this some serious thought and hope to god you don"t get stuck with them>>>sorry keyboard stuck -
I think I have to agree. Big companies do find different ways it seems to keep your money. Charge you for this and that. A small company will do the same. I have worked for both. I take it as a learning process. Like stated above, you learn how to play the game. I don't believe there is any one great trucking company. If there was, they would not need any drivers.

I've been watching this exchange for a couple of weeks now and I've certainly been reminded as to the quality of the "new age" truck drivers. All I've seen so far is people complaining about having to wait in line at a company shop facility without pay, or having to go "out of their way" to fuel at a company facility. It would truly be refreshing if some of you drivers were able to step back and get the "big picture" in trucking. The profit margin in this industry have been razor thin for decades due primarily to the many back lash effects of the deregulation process that began under Jimmy Carter. That being the case, companies MUST save money anywhere they can. Granted there are a lot of companies out there who try to do this at the sole expense of the driver, however, there are still several companies who do it in a very fair manner to everyone.
The top two largest budget line items for ANY trucking company is payroll and fuel, in that order. The only thing they can do about the fuel is to buy as much at big discounts as possible. These companies expect, with good reason, that their drivers are smart enough to operate the equipment as managers, not just steering wheel holders. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be very many left who can handle this. Whenever you do your part as a driver to help the company, at least a good quality company save money anywhere reasonably possible, that company becomes more finacially sound, thus, your career there become more stable and they have more money to put toward payroll, benefits, facilities, and equipment. A lot of you just have absolutely no clue that the real strength of any company, good or bad is the strength of their employees. If you have such a huge problem being asked to fuel at company facilities, or waiting in company shop lines without being paid, try owning your own truck. You'll get both your cominupance and your education in a hurry! Even though some of you don't have the attitude to understand this, you get paid in several ways every time you do something to save money and perform your duties as a professional truck driver who can be relied upon as a manager.
Trucking has never been easy, but it's a whole lot easier now than it was 20 or 30 years ago! If some of y'all will just spend a fraction of the time actully working at ALL the duties of your job that you do complaining and crying, you will begin to realize positive changes and effects in your career at so many levels most of you probably couldn't count them.
Be a professional. Be positive. Be patient. Be a manager and you might just find that you will be treated as one. Above all else, BE SAFE! It's up to each driver to make sure that they "KNOW AND UNDERSTAND" the many duties that are expected of a professional truck driver. For those who just can't live with these expectations with a positive attitude, please find something to do at home off the road because you are one of the most dangerouse drivers out there. Remember, it's not what you do, but it is ALWAYS how you do it that counts! Attitude is everything in this industry. You don't have to kiss anyone's butt, but you are expected to be a professional.vickw, MGASSEL and AfterShock Thank this. -
I am glad someone finally had the brass ones to say that.
I use to stop by one of our terminals that had fuel pumps when I needed fuel instead of fueling at the pilot that is if I was not too far away I do not mind taking 30-40 min out of my day to save the company money.
Besides that if I am getting close to the end of my 14 hour clock the terminal is alot eaiser to find a parking spot than any truckstop.
There is no lot lizzards at the terminal also do not have to worry about having the the trailer broken into.
