I work a 5/2 5/3 between 50 & 60 hr weeks home every night bring home roughly $1000 a week now that the oil has dropped before that it was an easy $1500+ a week bring home...I can't complain about my job I love it but now the moneys not there & I'm bored with it...my son is grown & on his own & it's just me & my horses so I'm ready to dip my toes into the OTR adventure & work 6 to 8 weeks taking a week off to load the ponies & head for the hills...with oilfield I spend 1 day catching up on rest because we do work out in all weather conditions & on less then safe roads so physical & mental tired add up by the end of the week...I think Family should come first so if it means OTR to keep them housed & fed then that makes them first but there truelly are other option with a CDL that can keep you closer to home..I worked construction 27+ years so knowing how to drive a semi + being qualified in other areas of construction kept me on pay roll..CDL can be a Golden Ticket but take care of it mind your P's & Q's do the job above required make yourself valuable & know your worth with out an ego...there's so much wealth of information on this board..absorb what you can & ignore what you have to & good luck to all out there :*D

So if you are brand new to the industry you shouldn't try to set yourself apart?

    Why not?

I guess it doesn't really work too well with OTR, try regional.

The idea that you have to away from home for months at a time to make money is simply wrong.

That is all? That is a bunch of horse####. When most of the LTL and food service companies are offering training why would you spend weeks on the road? Are they offering these jobs everywhere? No. But, before you listen to some clown tell you all the doom and gloom of the industry and "How it is" sit down and do the research for yourself. Idiots that think that you can only be on the road a month at a time beating yourself to death at 3,000 miles a week to make any money should be laughed at.

I was just telling my cousin, out of my first 24 hours off, typically 12 to 14 are spent sleeping, not all in a row, but definitely that many, it's like driver maintenance.

Remember that is Swift. Most likely that guy did not loose his job; he just got sent in for "more training." As if you can fix stupid.

However the day that guy got sent in for an evaluation, Swift probably fired a two dozen guys for critical events, wearing flip flops in the lounge, talking back to their dispatcher, violating driver cam policy, not taking a safety course, driving off duty, or any of another dozen chicken #### reasons. You can't fix stupid.
