Why is everyone complaining about the rates?

My preferred lane is northern California to Seattle/Portland and back. I have a contract client for loads up to Seattle, but some weeks he isn't ready so I have to find something which usually isn't a problem because the rates heading north are usually $2+ a mile. Getting loads back to California from up there is a real pain in the butt.

Here are the highest paying loads on the Convoy app on the west coast. Notice that the top 2 are both well under $2 per mile, but the next several loads are all over $2. Of course they're all from California heading north.

Now you should post return refrigerated loads back to L.A. from the Convoy app...if there are any ;-)

I saw posted lumber loads from Dillard, OR to Riverside, CA for $775 today. That's over 800 miles at 44k lbs.

Between my contract loads, Convoy, Uber and posting my truck on DAT as well as the apps, I've somehow managed to find decent backhauls for everything so far. Not a single load from the DAT board in over 2 months. Every time I do one I swear never again. Dealing with those brokers is just more trouble than it's worth.

Something I've noticed on the Convoy app is that the bid only loads have vanished over the last few weeks. There use to be quite a few, and now they're all gone. I guess they figured they can post lowball loads and some idiot will take them.

I gotta tell ya though, those Convoy refrigerated loads are nothing to write home about. The backhaul rates are dismal and will pull a guy right back down to an all miles rate of $2.00 a mile real quick like. For refrigerated loads? No gracias.
