Why is it OK to send drivers to unsafe places not meant for trucks

    You hand unloaded a transfer trailer of rip-rap? Did you run the trailer box ahead a little and pop the gate or did you pitch it all over the side? That's a lot of rock.

    Over the side and front. I needed it in front of the trailer. The whole ordeal was a lot of work. lol It is a good thing I was young back then, wouldn't even be possible today.

    I always say that, in order to find out where you stand in a company, to find out what the average driver makes and what the top driver makes. The top driver, even at a mega box carrier, will do 2X average. There is money to be made by being that driver that never drops the ball, the driver that makes it look easy. Is it easy? Hell no! If it were easy, the top drivers wouldn’t make 2X average.

    Want to be a name and not a number? Want to be treated with respect? The best way to do that is by being the Go To Guy that never drops the ball.

    “Hmmm, there’s this difficult load, do we give it to hand held crybaby and listen to him whimper for the next two weeks, or do we give it to GTG and relax?”

    “But Six, I don’t want the difficult loads...they’re DIFFICULT, remember?”

    Do you want to be average, or do you want to be the best in the business?

    The number one reason I shut my company down was whiny drivers, period.
    I just ran 3 trucks of my own, and a select few OO's. I ran myself just like I was a hired driver, so I was out there dealing with the very same issues as the others. My wife and one other lady ( well for a while it was a guy) took care of the office and dispatch duties. The amount of whining they endured was out of this world (my thinking) for such a small operation. I know because they would call me to whine too. I can't imagine how much goes on with even a small 100 truck company. Like I mentioned before, most loads come from an established business, very few people will be the first driver to drive a truck there, be it loading, more especially if you are pulling a box.
    I did pick up a power only construction trailer once, after the building, the fences, the landscape, and most importantly the guard shack and gate. I was ask before hand if I had a short truck. I was in a 234 wheelbase that I THOUGHT was short, but when I showed up, I was told that is not a short truck. I Knew one of my OO's had picked up there, and since he was 252, there should be no problem, WRONG. The trailer I was to pick up was parked nose to nose with another one in a narrow fenced lane. It took me some finangling and hooking and unhooking at different angles to the tune of an hour or more, just to get it to where I could back it down the lane, which went around the building. I assumed there was some sort of truck entrance somewhere, so I backed up around the building, wrong, the only entrance was the divided auto entrance, with narrow gates and a guard shack in the middle. Another hour or more getting it through the gate. lol I ask the guard, how the other truck had gotten out, and he explained he didn't, that they had finally had to get a short daycab out there to get it through the gate for him. The joke was on me.lol
