Why work for a small carrier? They are just rolling CSA 2010 targets!

This is something I looked over recently. It's dated 2007 and contains some of the info you are referring to. There may be newer info out there.

It amuses me that it's called a "random" inspection. Who are they trying to convince us or themselves?

Why is a lack of information deemed to make a carrier unsafe? Benefit of the doubt, innocent until proven guilty; perhaps I'm outdated.

I believe much of the randomness stems from the New Entrant Safety Assurance Program:

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/about/other/faq/faqs.aspx?FAQType=8&FaqQ=&FAQTypeSub=0

It looks like DOT is allowing new entrants to show what they are made of, but keeping close tabs on them so if they show that what they are made of is not good, they get shut down, hopefully before any damage is done. DOT is convinced, and they have proof, that the small, renegades are giving the rest of the industry a bad name. THIS IS NOT TRUE of all new entrants, just the opportunists that have no regard for safety.

If they run safe equipment, and follow the rules they will be fine. If they don't, they will be screwed. It's not that hard. If they can't afford to keep the trucks safe they should find a new business to be in as trucking isn't making them enough money.

I think CSA2010 is going to help level the field between the guys that do it right, and those who try to skate by.

I looked up a new carrier yesterday that got their authority in Dec, but as far as I know has not ran yet. Their ISS-D score is 94. I guess this means you are given an inspect score until you prove you are good.

I also looked up one company that is talked about on this board, and their score was 99. That is baaaad.

I'm a one truck show. My rig may not be the prettiest, but I take pride in it. Although we don't like the idea of random inspections, I work hard at keeping myself and my truck prepared for one.

OK, spill the beans! Who got the 99 score?

I'm glad you said that. It makes me believe I read something correctly about ISS-D. I think the score of 94 the new carrier you are referring has is a standard ISS-D score given to a carrier with no roadside inspections, and is based on the carrier's #of power units/# of inspections. It's almost arbitrary, but sets them up for increased chances for being inspected. A couple of good inspections could drop the score significantly and get them out of state and federal DOT inspectors' microscopes. It works the other way too, of course!

Dave, your old alma mater has a 98, so whichever carrier he's talking about really, really sucks!
