Wide Load Flatbeds Moving into Oncoming Lane on 2 Ln Road?

As the pole car I was always on the lookout for problems. I drove 35 years before I became a pilot car operator. I didn't want to hit anything with the load when I was the driver, Nor when I was driving the pilot car. If you snag something and you pull it down. the road is closed for hours. But if you go around the object by being on the other side of the road it saves everyone time.

Our job is to protect the load and protect the public. It is not as easy as everyone thinks it is. I will not tell you of the time I have been told I'm #1.

 

The other thing the general public needs to know is the trucking company did not pick the route for oversize/overweight. Those routes are chosen and permitted by the State. Sometimes those routes can add days to a trip!

 

Not always. I usually order my own permits and submit my own route. It is up to the state to decide whether I can take that route or will need to take a different route. If there is something unusual about the load, such as being considerably over height, over weight, or road construction, the state may change my route.

Another thing is bridges.
Some states have you take the bridge in the middle do to the weight of the ld.
Ia. says we must take all bridges on centerline and if speed limit is 55 or less we have to slow down to 5 mph.Any road 65 mph or plus,then we can go 65.

Il. have provisions like that s well. some places even interstate we can only go maybe 45 or even less at times..
