Many times my laptop on a unsecured connection tells me other users are also connected before I shut down.. but secured.. how do others gain access .. is the secured connection a shared connect not taking what others use into account thus running one off of a single hotspot and allowed? Like a allowing network of friends and shared gadgets access without any knowledge or consent of it.. besides apps already mentioned

my curiosity is up and running now

Perhaps they sneak in the back doors on the mobile network

Who gave the Qualcomm unit the password to access the hotspot? I'm pretty sure it didn't just take it upon itself to crack the access code on your hotspot and connect so it could surf porn.

Do you have your hot spot secured? I mean is it locked down so only you can log into it?

If not,.. its a wide open free wifi for anyone close enough to use it.

I scan for open (Unsecured) wifi anytime I stop. Motel 8 and various other slumotels are my favorite places to park near. I have even gone inside and asked the desk clerk what the password was and she gave it to me.

But yeah,.. imagine all the free porn someone had at your expense.

I'm an ex software engineer so I'm use to this stuff. It's setup with an encrypted password that's very complicated plus it's also setup for only 1 connection instead of multiple.

I also mess with other peoples unsecured wifi printers. I send images how I just broke in and stole all their info on their laptops (I didn't) but you see their system shut off pretty quick. I screw around with peoples Blue Tooth headsets too. If it's a strong signal I know their next to me. I try to connect and if their password is 0000 I'm in and they know it. They look all confused and look around. I keep doing it. Some of them ask permission to let someone connect. They do the same thing and look around. I have my phone in my lap and make believe I'm just staring out the window.

being on a unsecured wifi is a very bad move.

anyone that's smart enough. can access your computer and steal your identity.

our local news did a story a few years back on coffee shops with open wifi to the general public. the camera was rolling around, filming peoples reaction when their laptops was doing things without their hands even touching the machine. they had a hacker sitting in his car 2 blocks away.

Hackers are easy to spot, for some unknown reason they all wear black hats

Just put a password on your wifi end of story. The few that can actually crack into a secure wifi are few and far between and most likely not slumming it at a truck stop.

And while you're at it, make sure it's not WEP.
It is outdated, easy to Crack.

Most Hotspots or Hotspot Apps should be using WPA2 now anyway.

LOL I thought I was the only who did that. Before I got back into trucking I went back to school for my IT sciences degree. I wouldnt call myself an engineer,.. but I do some perl, C C++ and Java. My major is in security, forensics etc. Basically learned how to hack networks in order to protect them. I still keep up on many black hat projects. $80k in Sally Mae loans later and best job I found was a phone tech for $11hr. Seems much like trucking,.. unless you have previous work experience,.. a degree and multitude of certs doesnt mean squat in the computer industry anymore. That and I think it was a big mistake on my part as I am not an office person.

So um hmm,.. open wifi out.

You have any syncs open,.. cloud back ups or rouge programs streaming data?

Did you go in and turn off background data usage for your 3rd party software?

Just trying to think what might cause the excessive data usage.

They shouldnt be using enough to effect your data cap.

Did you look to see what program/s are using the most data?
