The evil side of me says to dump your airbags and pull out from under the trailer after leaving an inch or more of sunlight between the feet and the ground. You'll be able to get under it while he will have to crank the trailer up.

After he complains about that use a little spray paint to create a line on the leg as a reference point.

I have always found the direct approach to work best, next time he is in the yard with both trucks available just simple pull out a tape and get measurements from both trucks, IF you can get YOUR point across to him it may save you both some time/energy.

Simply put if you are both on air there should not be a problem and he is having to do additional work to raise the trailer higher than it needs to be, if he is on leafs you ideally need him to be lower than you, so he doesn't have to jack "up".

Got to be a way to make it work for both of you.

There are several reasons why trailer heights can be higher: 1), recently replaced air bags when carrying a loaded trailer after dropping that same trailer will set the trailers kingpin higher. The affect, the same truck backing under the trailer may have to lower the landing gear height to meet the fifth wheel. 2), Other trucks-Intl's trucks using 22.5 tires have a lower fifth wheel height 25.5. whereas a western star using 24.5" tires may have a 28.5 inch fifth wheel height. nuthing better in the world to crank a landing gear handle 55-70 times just to hook up a trailer...nuthing better in the world to do this repeatedly 12-14 times per day.

Just keep a couple of 2x4's around and throw them down back up on them and bingo your golden !!
No work no fussing just hook and run !!

If he is doing it to get to you this will get his goat because he will see that you have out foxed him !!
Keep the 2x4's in your side box so they will always be with you

I was going to recommend this. Plus you can keep the timber at the place you pickup as it seems this is the only place you have this problem. I keep a piece of timber with an angle cut to help putting on snow chains or taking a blown tire off a rim.

If he's doing yard work like that, it's not easy to keep setting a trailer specifically for certain other trucks. I can guarantee you that he's not dropping the trailer and then cranking it higher.

Not every truck has the same 5th wheel height.

And LOWERING a loaded trailer isn't that bad, I have to do it pretty regularly because my company has all different trucks. You can do it in the higher gear. Gravity is on your side. It's when you have to raise the trailer that it becomes a challenge.

If his 5th wheel is at that height, there's not much he can do about it. Yeah, he can leave the landing gear a little higher and drop his air, but then you're adding the risk of still dropping the trailer off the back of your truck, so it really should be to the ground from the start.

Get or make some graphite grease and smear it on the landing gear handles, he won't crank it more than necessary, also buy some gloves.
