Ultimatums are never a thing to be given lightly. If you are going to give one, you'd best be prepared to back it up, or any credibility you have built up with your boss has just gone right down the toilet.
Unfortunately, sometimes an ultimatum is the only thing they will listen to though. But I think that ACH is right, at least in most cases, they couldn't care less whether you stay or go, particularly when times are kind of slow. When things pick up again, they will just hire somebody else.

I got a standing offer out east doing oil related work in the fields. I only like my carrier cause the people are nice and they get me home each day. Problem is I've been home almost every day and night. Not like I hate working there. There is a massive difference between being employed by someone and working for someone. Right now I need to work to keep the lights on.
Big Don Thanks this. -
Maybe ultimatum was the wrong choice of words. It pretty much went like this: "hey, I know things are slowing down, but you guys are starving me. I can afford maybe another two weeks of working three days/week before I am so broke that I gotta do something else. I love working here but I got bills piling up and I can't afford to work here at 1,100 miles a week."
Btw, our area is hurting for local drivers. All of the carriers are having a hard time filling seats. It is insane that it took three months to hire five drivers (half which quit after a week). One guy lasted one full shift. It is not just us... It is everyone. Part of the problem is everyone is heading to eastern Montana or North Dakota to work in the oil fields. If you want daily home time and great pay, move up here. We got more jobs than bodies.Big Don Thanks this. -
At the same time your boss is going to wonder about your job choice. Yea I have been looking for jobs close to home and as much as I like working at YRC and the group of guys there I just want to move back home. My boss has no idea about that as Im not saying anything until its confirmed. Until then I just go in, do my job, keep my mouth shut... but then again Im on a time-start bid so I get work every night

Stuck on the side of the interstate. Pulling triples and two tyres on my first converter dolly blew. FML.

I had a flat on my dolley that I ran over a bolt in the rail yard. The guy came and just ripped the tire right off without even jacking up the trailer. Kind of cool how he did it. Normally the mechanics who come are cool as well... then again normally blue collar workers get along well with each other. Normally its the white collar rich snobs who think they are better than everyone else tends to get to me -
Got stuck driving a cabover. If you're not accustomed to driving one, it's quite an experience.
