According to The Trucker Newspaper new driver applications for driving positions has fallen. Up to 25 % in the last four weeks. They blame it on an improving economy among other things. This drop in driver applications is NOT limited to USA Truck or any one company but includes the industry as a whole.
My thoughts? Considering the fact that for whatever reason my miles are nowhere where they could be when compared to 5 years ago. Then add on inflation has increased the cost of everything EXCEPT the top cap on drivers pay. FMCSA has just about fined the driver to death with pathetic new HOS proposals, make believe sleep apena testing critera, and anything else they can throw at you. Individual states pushing tighter evironmental laws with more big fines. Poor road conditions, but plenty of money to mow miles of unneccsary shoulders and installation of thousands of new spy cameras all around the highways.. I find it hard to believe there isn't a 50% Drop. What do you think?
New Driver applicants decrease 20+ percent.

Good. Hope it drops off 100%.

Just by reading these threads it appears a lot of the WIA and Pell grants are drying up. Might help in the drop? Ah, yea, I am just guessing!

I'm not really surprised. But nice to know. The way allot of companies are treating drivers while on break is unacceptable. I'm not talking about USA. I was treated ok while on break at USA. But others really bad. I simply won't work for a company that doesn't have someway to keep us comfortable while on break. When they ask me if I have any questions for them, that is the question I ask. I have had many jobs. Driving is just one of them. The companies are going to have to resolve some issues. Or they will lose more drivers.Big Don Thanks this.

Those companies don't want drivers. They want indentured servants to move freight for them for nothing.

APU's are a good recruiting tool for driver comfort on breaks & layovers.

I am nearing CDL school completion. My class began with 49 students. 27 or 28 remain in the beginning of their third week. It seems a more demanding criteria and falling student quality may be adding up in declining numbers too at the entry end.

There's only a sucker born every minute . When tens of thousands get exploited each year the supply begins to dry up .

what we need is another article about how driver pay is bound to go up due to the need of another 200,000 drivers!!!!! improving economy? lol, thats a good one.. its been improving ever since obama took office, even when we had negative gdp...summer of recovery etc etc.
the trucking industry has been like this "forever"? at least in my limited history it has been just as it is, exploitative at best. i dont think the supply is drying up, they just lower the recruiting standards and have their HR recruiting staff make more calls and post more advertisements...
i was talking to a driver not long ago that i had driven to the hotel that my company uses and he was asking me questions..one of the things he mentioned is that the recruiters told him that the trucks have APU's (lol)...it isnt a complete lie because there are still some 2006'ish freightliners that have apu's although the apu prly doesnt work... but it is obviously deceitful because out of the 1200 or so trucks we have maybe 10-20 have working apu's and thats a generous estimate and those are on the worst trucks in the fleet. (they havent put apu's on any other trucks new or otherwise). so basically its used as a reason to get someone in the door by any means.Last edited: Mar 18, 2013
