Not for me. Poor load planning. Poor real pay. The driver is the enemy attitude? First day of orientation we were told there was a revolving door at the company. There is.

Pros

I had a good dispatcher

Cons

I’ve been with May for a little over five years and they’ve been good to me up until now, they decided to cut my pay because “freight issues” that’s total BS, they are doing this to many if not all-of their seasoned drivers. Corporate greed at its finest! Cutting my pay $140 a week is ludicrous and wrong, you don’t treat drivers with no tickets, no accidents, no violations like this! They no longer have enough miles to go around and they keep hiring new drivers every week out of terminals across the nation but don’t value their seasoned drivers at all. I am gutted and extremely disappointed for this treatment, it tells me all I need to know about my future with this company. There are companies out there that will treat you better, think twice about going to May, then think about it again!

Pros

Great DM, great home time.

Cons

The treatment of seasoned drivers. Giving increases then taking away your daily pay. Don’t recommend.

I started with MTC as a rookie out of school 3 years ago. I’ve learned that all companies (at least the several that I worked for since) are about the same. Hindsight tells me MTC was as good as any.

Pros

Good equipment, great maintanence, company pride.

Cons

Won’t let you bobtail home. A deal breaker for me as I lived far from their Salem terminal.

It's not May Trucking Company that's the problem, because before you hired they you what are going too do and be paid. I like being 48 state driver for May.

Pros

I think they are a good Company too drive for and will recommend.

I’ve been with May for 5 years and the first thing I have to say there are more complainers in the trucking industry than there are in grade school! Having said that, May has been extremely good to me it has its up and downs just like any other company. They take care of their equipment, you don’t have to chain if it’s out of your comfort zone, generous home time and if you need to get home more often they will work with you. Some months we get ours miles and others we don’t that’s the way it goes. They have good freight most of the time and good steady accounts, they have a daily pay along with a monthly bonus if miles are made. They could treat their seasoned drivers a little better as far as running those who run hard. They don’t bust my ### and I don’t bust theirs. Some of the new drivers they hire are something else, they do not have a “Red Carpet” available. My DM is awesome! She knows what she is doing and always has my back. I’ve had my ups and down with May, your going to have that anywhere you go like it or not! If your western 11 your governed to 61, 48 state is 65, they reimburse you for any wiper fluid, oil, coolant, load locks, parking…..anything, always paid on time every week, good benefits ect. They do put you into a new truck every couple years and I’m not fond of that but whatever it is what it is! If you just do your job and do it safely you will get treated well. Quit your complaining and just drive! So here’s an update,May decided to give us seasoned drivers a pay cut because of freight, that’s BS, $140 a week from daily pay, they no longer have enough fright to go around and they keep hiring new drivers from across the nation but take money away from experienced drivers, that’s says a lot about this company. I do not recommend coming to May, they will give you roses in the beginning then take them back when times get a little rough, go somewhere else and make more money.

Pros

Regular pay increases, paid on time weekly, good benefits, reimbursed for extra expenses, daily pay, breakdown pay, professional staff for the most part, terminals across the country, good freight, good home time, paid time off (vacation), all in all I’m happy to be where I’m at in the company.

Cons

Newer equipment, quality of drivers they hire can be ridiculous, all terminals are good except for Denver, it’s a pit! Could cough up more miles for their seasoned drivers and give them a little better daily pay to make up for miles not met, stop blaming the DM’s for the dumb stuff drivers do. Will give you increases then take them back.

I drove for May Trucking and met Y2K and he didnt even know it lol. I had all good experience with may. My first truck was a Pro-Star with 140,000 miles on it then about 6 months later I asked for a Pete and I got one with 62 miles on it. There was a few things that needed checked out on both and never had any problems getting the repairs done. Yes there were times that I sat, nothing more then 34hrs. I got home when I was suppose to and I was even given a extra day , half day to drive home and half day to drive back. When ever I needed any extras for the truck I would get them at a terminal or purchase them myself and was instantly re-embursed. Winshield wiper blades allways had 2 extra sets usually from terminal. I done the 11 western. As far as the guy commenting on the driver that had trouble backing, well who hasnt had a problem backing up, well normally those that take the drive through parking and sit and watch and make fun of those that are struggling. The only down fall was and seems to be their idling policy, however if you were the one paying for the fuel you would like to know why your truck just idled for 10-34 hours. I never had a problem with calling in or sending a message telling them the situation and not being charged for excessive idling. So thats my 2 cents worth. I finally got cleared from my doctor and will be going back with May. I say this no matter what company you drive for or if your O/O, drive safe, have fun, and Happy Hollidays to all of you.

Well, May worked out alright for me. I gave them about 2-1/2 years of my life when I first entered the trucking industry over 7 years ago. I'm an owner operator now with my own authority.

I have a friend who is still with May for almost 6 years now. He considers Atlanta his home and is dispatched out of Pensacola. He knows the ropes pretty well at May and does well.

I've been running the western 11 states at May for about 6 months now. They are the only company I've driven for, but I've been happy with them. Like Scooter said, the reefers are pretty decent, but the dry vans are in pretty sad shape most of the time. Sometimes you've got to think like MacGyver if you want to slide your trailer tandems. They are the biggest source of frustration for me, but I get over it. The staff at the terminals have always been nice.

I had one guy rage out on me while driving on I-80 through a construction zone because I was governed at 61 and he was stuck behind me. So be prepared for a lot of people to get pissed at you when it's not even your fault.

May is an honest company. I successfully completed two lease purchase contracts there. I worked for the company and they treated me fairly. The lease purchase contracts were done one at a time.
I would still be there but I developed severe night blindness. Retired in 2009

These days you dont need to drive a manual with may. You can go autos. If you can drive a 10, the 13s wouldnt be an issue. Whoever gives the road test will work with you if your struggling with shifting.

I'm quite happy here, they have been great to me.

The miles/pay are outstanding for me. I have a trainee 95% of the time and averaged over 3000 miles a week last year and took 2 -10 day vacations and my regular time off.

Put your dues in and the money is great. I'm at top pay (.45 mile) and top pay trainer (.15 mile). So I averaged $1,800 a week last year.

I'm a firm believer that you create your own destiny..

Q: Hey GaToR. Great info. Would you recommend dry van or their reefer division? I hear reefer is a bit difficult sometimes but I'm a newb at this. Hopefully I will pass the road test. Haven't driven in 10 months. Thanks

A: Refer division is essentially a rolling cold storage facility on wheels.

A lot of early morning/late night pick ups and deliveries. You are essentially on call 24/7 while the refer unit is running. Just wait until you're hauling a -10 load of ice cream in Atlanta in the middle of summer and the alarm signaling the refer stopped working goes off while you're sleeping, etc, etc, etc

I'm trying to decide between May and Schneider but after what you had said I now leaning more towards May. One of the things I like about May is their guaranteed weekly pay option.

Paid weekly. They use EFS, and you can opt for direct deposit if you wish to do so.
If you can afford it for the first 90 days, the guaranteed pay can end up a sweet deal. Gives you some time to knock the cob webs off and know exactly how much your going to be paid each week. Regardless of weather, any hold ups with loads, the rare breakdown, etc.

What makes that such a great deal is that, say you do run an average of 2800 miles. At the end of the 90 day period, you get a lump sum check for the difference you would have made had you been on mileage.

The bonus is if you happen to get laid over for any reason during that time, you received the guaranteed pay over the breakdown / layover pay which is much better.

new may driver

Just finished up my orientation yesterday with May and am at home now awaiting arrival of my trainer who is meeting me near home. Really excited to be working for May, seems like there is ups and downs, but it's trucking, thats just how it is haha. Orientation teacher was great and answered everything honestly and didn't fairy tale the class on anything. Starting off 11 western but probably going to be going 48 for longer dispatched loads. Look forward to letting everyone know how the training is once I get picked up. Equipment is all kept in great condition and rotated in good intervals. The staff and DM's seem to be nice but can't really put too much insight on that yet because I won't be assigned my own DM until I solo out. Cheers everyone!
