I worked at Roadshow Services for 24 months.
I always knew it would be a temporary stopping off place, on my way to a permanent, career-type driving job.
The company booked some very good concert tours, with many of them giving drivers nice hotel rooms, other times you would receive $50 if you chose to sleep in your truck, thus saving the tour some expenses.
Tractor quality ranged from rental-truck 'meh' to classy and powerful - and everything in between.
The company at one time had a policy of not paying drivers for ´travel days,´ which meant time traveling in a rental car or plane to a new work assignment or truck pickup point.
The pay rate pay was rather poor. I earned $90 per day ($45 being considered tax-free per diem) or $630 per week while away from home, home time of course was not compensated.
The company also once required drivers to ´assist´with both load-in and load-out .I finally got so tired of that, that I simply refused to do it.
I told the truck loaders,
´Hey, you guys load the truck, and I´ll drive it, okay? You don´t help me drive, so why should I help you load the dern thing?´´´
No one bothered me about that ever again.
At Roadshow, I was always slip-seating tractors, on a plane to somewhere once or twice a month, and also rented plenty of cars to get to new assignments.
It got kind of tiring after awhile, and when I was laid off, I almost viewed it as a blessing in disguise.
Pros
Concert tours are kinda fun (at first), the OTR lifestyle allows you to visit family and friends on the cheap, you can get nice hotels, free food, and once in a while you get a really great tour and a nice truck to go along with it.
Cons
Being away from home for up to three months at a time, and lousy, dirty, poorly-maintained rental trucks are also part of the package every so often.
The pay and benefits stink, and it´s not a job for anyone with a wife and family.
