Supposedly most shops won't even release a truck if it's not fixed or safe.

    flood Thanks this.

They can’t not release a truck, they will just flat out refuse to work on them and force them off the property because they can be fined even if they are just fixing a light bulb, I don’t like the stuff either but it’s here to stay, this is why I’ll keep rebuilding my old truck

TA won't let you leave their property. Except maybe on a wrecker.

I had a “foreign” gentleman buy two trucks off me. Very good negotiator, ruthless even. Anyway, he didn’t give 2 ####s that one had the DPF needing done. He said they were going to ditch those parts immediately anyway. I was pretty surprised but guess shouldn’t be.

    Perfectly legal.

I've even done it a few times.

The only way they can hold it is if they have a mechanic's lien. Otherwise they're not allowed to hold on to your property. Like any repair shop that claims they can't let you leave because your brakes aren't safe. It's illegal.
