Good afternoon everyone. I'm in between careers and having wanted to get my CDL many years ago before making a career in the military I'm now back to pursuing that goal. I am 40 years old and looking to see what some opinions are as far as my plan.
My intention is to apply with one of the bigger carriers, probably Schneider, and get the free CDL along with a good year of experience before purchasing my own rig and doing the owner operator thing. Does anyone have a better company to start out with or any advice to someone such as myself starting down this path? Thanks in advance.

If you have zero experience with the trucking industry, that company driver job needs to go about 3 years, maybe longer.

Yeah, no hard plans to jump out on my own after the first year, I would definitely plan on seeing how I'm stacking up against other drivers before making such a decision. Thanks for the advice.

Schneider pay is about the lowest of all the starter companies.

Where is your location? There's better companies that train.

I'm just outside Indianapolis and from what I understand it's a hotspot for trucking.

I've thought about it but it's tough getting in at 40 and providing as the wages tend to be low the first four years or so while training.

There's dozens of retired military men and women on this website that made trucking work well for them.

They will but it will eat it all up when I can let my daughter keep it and get 4 years of education.
