    Three questions.
    1.) if all you can get out of Carlisle is a money loser, why go to Carlisle?

    2.) if you do go to Carlisle why not charge enough to bounce out of there and get back to another good load as fast as possible?

    3.) why not deadhead out of Carlisle back to Pittsburgh or Youngstown or Columbus and pick up the same $1250 dollars but only on 4-500 loaded miles instead of 700? Sure it’s the same money, but it’s not the same expenditures. And it’s refusing to haul money losers.

    Opus' #1 rule of freight;
    "never go in unless you know how to get out."

    1 And 2. Prior to going to Carlisle, PA, I do find well enough paying freight to Carlisle Pa that even deadheading all the way back home is not going to kill me. However, $1250 vs $0 for 700 miles and a few hundred of tolls is not something to snort at. Heck, even $500 for an easy straight shot back would be acceptable. Math is trivial: X+Y = Z the bigger Y the bigger Z.

    3. That's not something that hasn't been tried or done, or something that nobody every thought about...especially, if the circumstances are right. Often times, I did deadhead as far as Cleveland or Columbus, OH because the freight there paid not much lower than the freight from PA.
    Today, you won't find $1250 freight from OH taking you back to Chicago +/- 200 miles every day, every time. Not, if you are empty on Friday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa

    I’m in a totally different segment than you. I do work the spot market. I can make far more revenue by bypassing the cheap loads on the board and bouncing all the way back. By the time I consider the time that’s involved and 9 out of 10 times the cheap loads are the problem loads they just aren’t worth it. I learned a long time ago I wasn’t willing to compete with van load spot market.

    Absolutely no sympathy for those that complain about cheap freight, the last few posts says it all.

    How much is the hourly rate? It’s very likely that it went down even though the mileage rate went up.

    $4 × 1500 = $6000
    $1 x 680 = $ 680
    ___________________
    2180 = $6680

    We get $3.06 a mile using non-mega carrier mathematics.
