And those were pretty happy days when fuel was $2. Non-mega carriers mathematics.

$1758 to the cat for 700 paid miles.

    $2.50 mile

Advantage to the cat. Cause she knows "stuff."

A given segment also enables other aspects of life that others don't. Van freight means little headache and little concerns. It is easy for the peace of mind. For example, I always try to make it so I stay as little out on the road as possible. I often plan the trips so that I can stay at night at home en route vs in the sleeper. That's at the expense of revenue that could be otherwise found in other types of operation. Why spot market and not own customers? Because I don't want to stay committed and tied to obligations. I am comfortable the way it is and I have no problems for this not to be called business or something lacking ambition... $300 for parking and $740 for insurance is the core of my monthly overhead. $2200 for the IRP sent last month. I bought all set of trailer tires back in Fall and the drives will last till next winter. If new truck prices drop down to 180K or used down to 45K, I'll make a bid. So going to Carlisle, PA for $2300 and coming back for 1200 is not going to wear me down for another year and half or so. However, I noticed, that even $2300 is no longer true, they post rates there for as little as 1500...so that's hasn't been my choice of a money making lane lately.

Think of it more like a casino, because no matter which way you play, you play against the house.

You can play the penny slots one penny at a time, whittling away the day hoping you make enough to make a little more than what you came in with. Anyone with a pulse can do that method.

Or you can sit down at the tables; blackjack, poker, roulette, whichever tickles your fancy. However, you’d better not only know the rules, but when to make moves and when to sit back or fold. You can make, or lose, in just a few minutes what can take the penny slot folks all #### day.

If they want to spin their wheels just to be busy, I say let em. I’ll sit here and drink beer watching them waiting for the next upswing.

It is all correct but the puente of the story is not about the common crowd swinging slot machines, it is about gentlemen with tuxedos, in the next room, playing their high stake poker game and being - supposedly - bothered by it. No. They they even don't acknowledge the crowd and what it does.
