I like using my laptop as opposed to a dash mounted device, just for the size of the display and all.
I don't nor would I put my trust into any device. use it as a tool. Streets and trips, plus google maps, using the sat. view and bbeing able to see ahead of time the roads, and a simple phone call to a customer, typically able to stay out of trouble.
I had pc miler, but really never got into its interface and usability. It was a older version I came across, might d/l a newer version and give it a whirl. -
Was checking out the truck stop plus website, and they have a link to a laptop stand.
Cheaper than the ones in the truck stops.
Made out of plexiglass.
Next stop Lowes, I think I can make one the same. Heck a few pieces of pipe, a couple of fittings and flanges to mount with. wiz bang I think I can come up with a nifty stand as opposed to just bouncing around on the passenger seat -

Streets and Trip is a Microsoft program. You can get the basics of the program at any Best Buy / Walmart store. Or if you like you can probably buy it directly online with microsoft on their website. http://www.microsoft.com/Streets/en-us/default.aspx
Personally I highly recomend NOT getting ALK Co-Pilot 11. Terrible program, terrible service, terrible support, zero updates. If you want to get routed the wrong way, Co pilot is perfect.
Frankly I would recomend using the directions and google maps with aerial views to tell you wahts comming for directions. New Jersey is wonderful for surprises. Below is such a surprise. Directions were "After off ramp make left turn at light, turn at entrance to costco". Reality is comming off the ramp one needs to stay right and use cross over to turn left. In this job its all about the details.Attached Files:

I have been playing with IGuidance 3.1 ... not bad.. not good.. but I like the umpc feature.. it makes the screen huge.. you can read it from 8ft away.. but it is not made for trucks.. but good to get from city to city.. an it has speed warnings..that can be set on auto or manual.. you can right click anywhere on the map an get weather report.. so tha is kind of nice also..

Another great GPS program is Garmin Mobile PC. It looks very similar to the Garmin Nuvi's, and the maps are VERY up to date. Also, if you use a touchscreen, it's very easy to use with that. I have a 7" touchscreen mounted to the dash that's hooked to my laptop. The only time I open the laptop is when I need to do more detailed work with it.
