hello all, not sure if it's normal or not but i'm going thru alot of front hub gear oil. I don't see anything leaking but I feel like I'm popping the rubber plugs out and filling them up. Is this normal orrrrr?

    thanks

Disc or drum brakes? Did you look on the back side of the wheel and drum to see if there is oil there? If drum brakes there should be a backing plate that you can pull off and look at the drum and shoes to see if there is oil on them. If there is no leak what weight oil are you using? Make sure you are using the correct weight. Front hub oil has a service interval just like the trans or differentials.

You have a leak, period. Gear oil does not evaporate.

I'm using 85w-140 gear oil. and I believe its drum front brakes. 1999 freightliner fl-112 is make and model. and I haven't had a chance to pull front wheels off

If you're going through the amount you're saying you are, you should be able to see the oil literally everywhere from a mile away.

Maybe not evaporate like water but burns off or something. I worked heavy truck fleet and topped off many transmissions, differentials and front hubs that did not have a drop leaking.

You won't see anything on the ground, look at the backside of the tire, bet its coated in oil spray.

If its leaking that bad i’d think you can smell it before you’d see it. Hot used gear oil mixed with brake linings dust smells like you ran over a skunk and soaked in the juice. My dogs can sniff it out and warn of the leak. Lol!

Rideandrepair, bzinger and homeskillet Thank this.
