Local Community College Truck Driving class. Automatic only.

My wife and I have benefited from on having just the two of us assigned to our instructor so we have had plenty of practice time. The CC requires each student to do each maneuver twice in a row without encroaching to be considered Proficient on that maneuver. In order to test for your CDL you must be proficient on all maneuvers, inspections (5) and drive for an hour though an approved route without markdowns.

My wife and I have completed all our proficiency’s so the rest of this week will just be more and more practice with our CDL A tests next week.

Im extremely happy with our instructor and the challenging routes he has had us drive through. Today was our first real highway miles (30 miles) because our truck was giving us a smog regen alert and he said it would help the engine DEF regenerate.

    things have clicked

Good for you. It sounds like you are getting the most out of your school experience. When the opportunity presents itself, you will benefit from more backing practice. That's the one skill you really need when you get out on your own. Even with lots of experience, some days you can't help but do it like you do it 5 times per day at that one spot. Other days you just can barely get into the door like you it's your first backing attempt after 5 years of vacation. Learn to back when you don't have as much room directly in front of the dock door as you would like and also learn how to back into a door when you don't have as much room to the left of the dock door as you would like. Backing is what separates most rookies from old-timers.

Thanks for posting detailed updates on your schooling. This information is invaluable for new people wondering what lies ahead when they decide to start.

See if the trainer will take you out to a truckstop nearby for some parking and maneuvering practice.

LOL, his response would be “so more of the same things we have been doing every day?”

we have been doing city and tight country road turns since day one. This grumpy old man who is our instructor seems fearless from the passenger seat :)

Most times we don’t have the wide open space that is shown in this video on button hook turns and MUST take part or all of the on coming lane just to keep the trailer wheels out of the ditch or off the curb.

he grudgingly told us to get on the highway yesterday because the regen alert came on the display. My wife always runs cold but when we drive with our instructor she is pealing off layers because of the stress :D The only joy he may have left in life is finding the most challenging turns to run us through, and we are grateful… mostly

We found out today that they are going to push our test from Monday to Wednesday because DOT is coming to inspect our testing process. Fun, it’s always great to have your evaluators under the microscope when they’re evaluating you. o_O

We were also told that CRST is coming to recruit tomorrow as well. Any questions I should ask them?

If my math is correct--CRST is very heavy into team driving.

Thus--I would ask them everything you've already asked Schneider.

You might like some of CRST's answers, better.

    DOT visit? Re-lax.

If your grumpy instructor is only half as good as earlier depicted--then he (and you) will ace the DOT visit.
