I have been studying for my CDL for about a month now whilst looking for companies that offer CDL training and something came to mind I hadn't considered during this time, which is my employment gap. I have a 5 year employment gap because I've had to take care of my grandmother.
How badly will this affect my chances at getting accepted to a company that does CDL training? I would go to a school but the one near me is $5000 and I simply can't afford that right now.
Looking to get CDL.. but

Just from what I’ve read on here, you might as well try to get on with a company that offers training. A lot of these new CDL holders seem to be having trouble finding jobs after getting their CDL. Knowing the company will pay for the school and you have a job is worth quite a bit right now. You’ll have to put up with some tough going probably for a year or two tho.
Wargames and Moosetek13 Thank this. -
It's a negative, for sure. You need to document what you were doing somehow. For all they know you were serving time in jail under an alias or a drug addict or burglarizing neighborhoods.

When I started at Swift I also had an employment gap of about 3 years.
I got letters from my sister and a friend stating what I was doing for that time and had them notarized.
You would have them write the letter, but don't sign it yet. Then you would go to a notary service with them (the person or people that wrote the letter), and sign them in the presence of the Notary Public. The letter would be signed and stamped by the Notary Public.
Your bank or local post office might provide the notary service, otherwise you would need to find a Notary Public near you.OldeSkool, tscottme, Turdzthaword and 2 others Thank this. -

I’m seeing a pattern here. Companies are firing these kids left and right

Did you file taxes during that 5 years?
Others on here also cared for family for years and still became truckers.
Some said they also did lawn care in the neighborhood for cash while caring for loved ones. -
Where is your location; state & nearest town/city?
silverspur Thanks this.
