Another trade will pay more than trucking. You imagine freedom and quite drives by you will be the one blamed when anyone doesn't do their job on time. You will be in heavy traffic for hours per day and living like a stray dog. You won't make but half the money to expect until 2 or 3 years of experience. A big job gap isn't going to help you. Trucking is not what outsiders imagine except there is some driving.

True, but if you can live in your truck for without paying rent or bills then you probably are significantly ahead of most folks in comparable occupations. I would go as far as saying OTR is probably not worth it if you can't do that for at least a year or two and it would purely be a stepping stone to a better job elsewhere.

Go to a truck stop and observe for an hour - then ask questions of random drivers.

This is the most dangerous job, so think about that.

I was 34 when I got my CDL. 65 now. Trucking was a different animal in 1994. Having a CDL is always a good thing, but tread carefully. And the very best to you.

Trucking is a far more dangerous job than corrections. Even know it wouldnt seem like it... Trucking i think is only worth it if you actually have a plan or a goal of what you wanna do.. like starting your own business or working ur way to some super specialized area of industry.. if u just go out and do otr work for a mega you will get burnt out so fast with all the endless amount of ######## those guys throw at you

If you like an irregular schedule, the inability to make plans, missing time with friends & family, not showering every day, sleeping or wanting to park when you want to, an endless cascade of horrible food choices, dirty bathrooms, an interstate system & infrastructure that is falling apart daily, very bad drivers including those in 18 wheelers, constantly being accused of anything/everything that goes wrong, standing in some kind of muck puddle at a fuel pump....(sigh), I could go on...find something else to do with the 30K. Call some local plumbing/HVAC companies, see if they are willing to train. Even 7-Eleven sounds appealing next to being handed the keys to a truck right now.
