Would you stay where you’re at and keep building CDL experience or try to get your foot in the door at Old Dominion?
I’m a newer CDL driver and currently doing beverage delivery. I’m making $28/hr right now and go to $30/hr after 6 months. Usually work less than 60 hours a week, good benefits and PTO, and it’s pretty stable. The job is definitely physical but I’m getting driving experience.
I have a friend who is a dock supervisor at Old Dominion, so I have an opportunity to get in there on the dock and hopefully work my way into a driving position.
My biggest question is whether I should just stay where I’m at for a while and keep building my CDL experience, then look for a better driving job later, or take the opportunity to get into ODFL now even though I’d be starting on the dock.
For anyone who’s worked at Old Dominion, how realistic is it to go from dock to driver? And would you personally take that route, or keep building driving experience where I’m at?
Just trying to figure out which would be the better move long term.
What should I do, stay or leave for Old Dominion?

@Gomer1969 drives for Old Dominion. He can help you.
austinmike Thanks this. -
My son went through the dock to driver class 5 years ago and he's been a driver since then. Our dock pays somewhere in the low to mid $30's and hour so you'd make more on the hour than your current job. My terminal is currently in the middle of a class and we're hiring for linehaul and city at quite a few terminals across the country.austinmike, Dennixx, Ddh77777 and 1 other person Thank this.

Which terminal are looking at?
-
I was looking at the Knoxville/White pine terminal.
They have a team driver position but idk if I want to be stuck in a truck all week with someone lol.austinmike, OldeSkool and Gomer1969 Thank this. -
The only person I'd ever team with is one of my sonsaustinmike, Sons Hero, OldeSkool and 1 other person Thank this.

Seemingly you've got a good job. Are you happy there? If it were me, I would not make a change unless I absolutely had to. I know OD is a coveted job by many in the industry. I just don't believe in making a change for the sake of change. Now you're hesitant about team driving.....that tells you what you need to know about yourself.Lonesome, MSWS, austinmike and 2 others Thank this.

Yes but OD has non team driving but idk how long it’ll take before one opens up and yes I’m happy here where I’m at I have seniority as I’ve been with the company as a whole 7 years but better pay/ and I enjoy driving is the reason I got my CDL
-
Yeah it could take a while for a truck to open up. Doesn't seem like people leave that job that easily, but you never know! If OD is your end goal, take a leap of faith!

I would not team drive. If that’s the only way in I personally wouldn’t even think about it. Two guys in a truck is not that great I promise.
WesternPlains Thanks this.
