I have new york driver license and I want to attend CR England's trucking school in Indiana. My question is that how do I get tested for my driving skills. Is it possible to take a road test in Indiana when I have NY driving license, or do I need to come back to new york and take the road test, but then I may have to pay for all the expenses to take the test like renting a tractor trailer. Please someone give a advice what to do. Is it possible to get tested in Indiana so that I don't have to pay money for truck in NY.

i believe the way it works is, once in Indiana, you transfer to a driver's license there. do your schooling, get the Indiana CDL license. get back home to NY, then transfer that over to a NY CDL......i do not believe any more road testing by the DMV will be done.

I'm from North Carolina. Went to CDL school in Texas. I paid to get the Texas CDL (passed written tests and road test). I received the Texas CDL after returning to North Carolina and paid full price to transfer it back to NC CDL. No written or road test, just signs and eye test.

In order to get licensed in Indiana do I need to provide some residency proof.

When I went down to get the CDL Permit. Filling out the paperwork, it asks for an address. I was in a CDL School and we used the address of the motel. In Texas there is a space that asks what type of home is this. One of the blocks was motel. Then Pass at least the basic tests (general knowledge test, air brakes and combination vehicles). After that you can get behind the wheel with a CDL holder. After the instructor feels you can pass the CDL road test, you go schedule an appointment to take the test. You will have to know the pre trip inspection and the air brake test. The Pre trip isn't bad, just start going over the truck and trailer, what you can remember and if you do it good enough you are OK. Air Brakes, I had to tell the examiner what I was doing and all steps and buzzers. After you pass the road test, you go in and hand in the paper work. About 30 days (for me) I received my Texas CDL. Next day went to North Carolina DMV and it cost me 198 dollars to transfer from Texas to NC. Still waiting on the NC hard copy. NC requires you to have a hard copy. I goggled both Texas and North Carolina before going and downloaded both CDL manuals. If I can help any more just shout out.

http://www.in.gov/dor/files/cdl.pdf Link to Indiana CDL manual. Looks like you transfer everything to Indiana then after you get it, transfer it back to your home state. I have waited for 30 days after school for Texas hardcopy and 8 days for NC. Still no NC hardcopy. Reading about CDL from Indiana sounds to me it is just like Texas.
