Why the Dislike of Denny's?

I ate there, I saw the sign - perhaps not the places you visited, but there were several "Little Black Sambos" in our area, with quite a few in Houston.

 

It must'a been a different company....Or, You're not telling the truth!

 

Yeah, that's it.

 

Since we started this conversation about Sambos and Dennys I have done tons of searching for ANY refernce to ANY restaraunt called "Li'l Black Sambos", "Little Black Sambos" and any other variation that I could think of.
There is NO reference anywhere to the name you claim that you saw. There are thousands of references to the book "Little Black Sambo" and to the Sambos restaraunts and the misperception of the name of the chain...But there is NOTHING to validate your story.

Your story is either not true or is about some "one location" local place that had nothing to do with the Sambos chain and possibly was converted into a Dennys franchise when it became necessary to do so because of public outcry over the name.

You can be as mad as you choose to be over the fact that your claims are not true...But that will never make them true.

 

Denny's used to have some variety. Looking at the menu now, you can get about five things prepared in various ways. Everything comes in frozen and most of it is nuked. That's why the bread is rubbery and denser stuff cool to cold on the inside. Getting hashbrowns cooked on both sides...you just can't get it! Even when you tell the wait person you want them scattered and browned, you get a patty that's been cooked only on one side...while the other is raw. Had one waitress go back to the grill and do it herself because the cook wouldn't do it. The portions are small, prices are high and quality is poor. There are some exceptions to this, but not many. You can't even get spaghetti at Denny's any more. But you can sure get liver n onions. Yack!

I'd rather spend my money at a place that will serve what I want to eat, cooked on site and with real people serving. You know...the disappearing mom n pop places. They'll get my money first.

 

Hang in there. When you get to be an old folks you get 25% off your bill and coffee for a dollar. Then you can get terrible food at reduced prices. Actually I think the quality varies by location. I've never had really bad food at a Dennys but I've never had really good food there. My experience at Dennys is somewhat limited.

 

Haven't done a Denny's that wasn't in a Pilot for quite some time, but if the portion size has decreased in the free-standing units as it has in the others, than I have no desire to go back.

The units in the Pilots have, by my experiences (all two of 'em) provided very small portions for the dollar.

And I've never heard of a "Little Black Sambo" restaurant either. Grew up in Santa Monica, CA, where there were several Sambo's restaurants, one of them in the lobby of the medical building where my father had his office.

 

And would one expect any more at a Pee-Lot-associated business? I think not...

 

Interesting conversation, and personally, I could care less about the origins of any of these restaurants, or why my friends and family feel the way they do. I'm not going to argue with them, I just mentioned feelings within my circle.

It doesn't mean I need to run right out to Denny's and eat - I'm no longer driving for a living (except driving to inspections and court appearances), so I can eat where I want, thankfully.

More than anything, though, I wouldn't get mad over a discussion like this, with fairly anonymous people, because I have much more important things to get worked up over... like whether to replace my wife's stolen (but brand new) Ruger LCP .380 w/Crimson Trace with an exact copy..or give her my Springfield Armory XD40 (w/ Crimson Trace) and get a .45 for myself, like I originally wanted. The XD40 was from a buddy, and too good a deal to pass up, but I miss my mini-cannons.

THAT is something worth getting worked up over.
