I was not sure as of to where to post this but I am curious to see what do you think.
FreightWatch International reported cargo theft industrywide rose by 4.1 percent in 2010 to an average of 75 cargo theft incidents per month, the most ever recorded.
The food and beverage industry was the most heavily hit by cargo theft, accounting for 21 percent of total theft activity, with an average loss value of $125,000 per incident. Electronics accounted for 19 percent of all cargo theft and an average loss per incident of $512,000. But while the rate of cargo theft continued to grow, FreightWatch data show the average value per loss declined in 2010.
Do you think Truck Drivers should be allowed to carry pistols in their trucks?

I am allowed to carry a pistol in my truck..
-
-
I believe it's up to the company...I carry personal protection, but it's not a firearm...If someone wants to take my load, they can have it, it's not mine, it's insured and I'm not getting into a firefight over it...
Those that do carry, what do you do when a delivery/shipper has a sign stating no firearms allowed on premises?... -
Don't tell em you have one, what shipper or receiver have you been to that searches your truck?
-
You need to break that info down a little more, such as how many of those loads were parked (with or with out tractor) vs whole rigs taken by force. Carrying a gun from state to state is illegal unless its locked & blah-blah, so when you take a shower they get truck trailer, load and your gun! DA#ned if ya do and da#ned if ya don't. Myself? I could legaly carry (I stay instate)but I don't, it's hard to hijack a truck when ya don't stop!

Entering Canada and searched. -
you can't drive a commercial vehicle and carry a gun... it's illegal in all 48 states... anyway, I'd rather let someone get away with my load than end up in a possible gun fight.
I do have to say... I wouldn't hesitate to kill someone that threatened my life if I had a firearm in my rig. The repercussions would be horrible, though.
Go ahead, steal my load... you won't get far with the tracking, anyway.
I know trucks aren't totally theft-proof, but things have come a long way.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd get myself into trouble if I carried in a rig... I'd rather give up my truck than give up my life. -
I whole hardheartedly agree that drivers (once trained and qualified) should have the ability to carry a weapon to protect themselves (first) and their load second. It is #### scary when you pull into an unknown area and not everybody checks landmarks (if you have to call for help).
I am not a driver, I mange a company and this was brought up at a meeting today and every one had a different opinion on the subject so I wanted to see what the ppl in this forum think.
I've read a few posts from OOIDA about truckers being killed while sleeping for their organs and some other very scary staff, so it got me in to thinking....Last edited: Apr 29, 2011
