It's an O/O form of self-worker's comp. Pretty costly and covers a percentage of one's pay. If I remember it tops out at 500 a week, or some-such with a questionable agency specific to Malone. We had a policy through them. I started calling about coverage, got sent to AIG - no answer, only to spend two days calling to ask what company covered my husband.
When I finally tracked them down, I found out they didn't cover much. I cancelled it the next week. We could do better with our savings, frankly.
Malone drivers pay for a pretty good insurance plan for office workers. Meanwhile, drivers have been offered discounts with the truck stop docs, as insurance. THAT'S my major gripe with Malone. -
It is an occupational accident policy that is similar to workers compensation but is less expensive. It is usually easier to collect. I had a driver who slipped on a trailer the first day he worked. He broke a couple of ribs. It was a really freaky accident. The insurance paid off with no problems. Like workers comp it pays I believe up to 75% of your wages up to a certain amount per week with a cap of $500,000 or $1,000,000 in lifetime benefits. My policy was through OOIDA. I believe the policy we had paid either $400 or $500/week (depending on the policy) if you are unable to work due to a work related accident. That is in addition to paying for any medical care you may need. I have only had to file a claim once with a driver and had no problems in collecting. In fact, they were very good to follow up. Some carriers do offer a settlement deducted policy through their insurance provider. I have always preferred having my own insurance away from the carrier. Some owner operators and small fleets will take out an occupational accident policy on their drivers rather than pay the higher premiums on workers comp. -
On my first read over of your response, I noticed the (vicinity) $500 a week top out for a disability payment. Originally, I thought that isn't too terribly bad.
Then...............I realized that we are talking O/O, not company driver. $500 a week? What an insult. Trust me, if I were to draw disability (as a company driver) it is quite a bit more than that. What a shame.
The CRST/Expedited/Dedicated/Malone tornado continues unabated through countless lives......

No workers comp or occupational accident policy will pay you as much to not work as you can make working. You might check around and find a policy that pays more, but your premiums will also be higher. Keep in mind that in addition to paying your a salary while you recooperate, they will also be paying your medical bills. If you are an owner operator you are a businessman. Workers comp and accident policies are designed to help to supplement or replace lost wages, not business income. -
What kind of fuel discounts are you guys getting? My recruiter told me anywhere from 0.08 to 0.30 gallon discount depending on which truckstop I go to.

If you use T/A or Petro you can get up to .32 a gallon depending on the individual truckstop. That discount goes back on your fuel card within a few hours. You also cab get discounts at Pilot and flying J and those discounts are returned to you each month on your payroll statement.

You also get them at Love's now, in the same manner as you do at TA/Petro. In a city where both chains are found, Love's usually has the better price.
