You are a better man than me. I don't think I could do it, esp in the winter. I can teach a lot of things, but driving is something I can train. I get too nervous. the wife took out the kids in the car when they were learning.

The thing about Central is that the trucks that they lease are never out of warranty on the major components that cost a lot of money. there is 500,000 warranty on engine, trans, rearend, etc. the oil changes are about $200.00, grease job is $25.00. There is a 3 year warranty on batteries. If you have a fridge built in, 1 year on that kind of stuff; upholstery, etc. Normal wear and tear stuff like light bulbs the driver pays for. If you run an engine out of oil, that will cost you unless someone didn't put the oil in after a change or forgot a filter. (It has happened).

I also agree with you thoughts on driving with ANY company for your first year. It pays off your school and gets you used to the system. If you want to consider lease after that, I suggest a used truck with a shorter lease, like a year. Then if it is not what you expected, get out of it when the lease is over. They also have some trucks with 6 month leases that you can give it a shot in. Central leases the trucks from the manufacturers and then re-leases them to the drivers. That is why they have the good warranties.

Overall, my experience with the lease has been good, but I am watching every gallon of fuel and where I buy it. I will sometimes sacrifice a penny or two per gallon if I need to get fuel during my drive shift and don't want to spend the extra line 4 time at the pump. I will buy the more expensive fuel, pay the extra $3.00 to fuel in the morning on my 15 min inspection and save the 10-15 min you waste with a mid-drive fueling. It boils down to, "How much is your drive time worth".

You don't HAVE to pay social security, but you won't collect benefits if you do not pay in to the program. I have a LOT of years paying in and will get benefits based on the amount I paid into the program.

Certain states will not allow you to transfer your class A to their state if you get your license somewhere else unless you have been driving for a certain period of time. SC is one of them. I think there is a total of 5 states that way.

Just because the tax is higher doesn't mean the fuel is more expensive. In fact, the opposite is usually true. That's likely why they have you fuel in CA.

Who is it that is giving the fuel tax rebate?

Yeah Nomad, you should fuel in the morning whenever possible. Its the coolest part of the day and the cooler it is the more fuel you will get.

why is that? does it have to to with tanks expanding and retracting?

No the fuel does. It's not that big of a deal if your tanks are low. The fuel you get from the Trk stop will not expand and contract much as its in the ground.
