Stab or Controlled Breaking Which Best/Fastest ?

    Why don't Dot Manuals say which is best Stab or Controlled breaking ?

    Emergency Stops
    If somebody suddenly pulls out in front of you, your natural
    response is to hit the brakes. This is a good response if there’s
    enough distance to stop, and you use the brakes correctly.
    You should brake in a way that will keep your vehicle in a straight
    line and allow you to turn if it becomes necessary. You can use the
    “controlled braking” method or the “stab braking” method.

    Controlled braking. With this method, you apply the brakes as
    hard as you can without locking the wheels. Keep steering wheel
    movements very small while doing this. If you need to make a
    larger steering adjustment or if the wheels lock, release the brakes.
    Reapply the brakes as soon as you can.

    Stab Braking
    • Apply your brakes all the way.
    • Release brakes when wheels lock up.
    • As soon as the wheels start rolling, apply the brakes fully
    again. It can take up to one second for the wheels to start
    rolling after you release the brakes. If you reapply the brakes
    before the wheels start rolling, the vehicle won’t straighten out.

    Never been told to use stab braking until wheels lock up thats a disaster waiting to happen. Stab breaking has always been described to me as pressing firmly on the brakes reducing speed about 10 mph and releasing until speed builds back up the 10 or so mph and repeating.

    My opinion is that they need to remove stab braking from the cdl manuals. They are using this as an option for new drivers who likely do not have the best braking skills. Just leave them locked a second or two too long and see what happens. I would believe it would be better to use controlled braking and if you inadvertently lock them up, ease off.

    Mountain Driving Controlled breaking is what you are describing.


    Im asking about emergency situation....

    Also can you lock up a truck with ABS all the way around ?

    if you have abs you dont stab brake,you wont lock up with abs brakes

    Never go by the D.O.T. manual, it was written by desk pilots. Use it as a general guide and apply common sense. Use your experience and build on it.

    Think about it this way,if you're constantly holding the brakes down that drum and pads are getting hotter and hotter with no way to cool down. At least with stab braking,components have some time to cool off. And no I wouldn't try to lockup my wheels either. I try to be at the recommended speed when I crest the mountain or in some case have to let her buil up a little to get there. :biggrin_25524: Than I like to turn my cackle machine on while keeping the engine under rated RPM. As the speed comes up my cackle machine get worse,it's time to snub her back down to recomended speed again. Than let off brakes:; repeat process and as bottom nears if it's straight enuff and open in front let's see how far she rolls.................................

    Swear to god it does not check 3 different states.....

    In emergency use stab or controlled braking.

    Defines stab as brake till lock let off then brake till lock let off...

    Defines controlled as bake as hard as you can without locking.

    Stupid guide wants rookies to lock it up....

    Perhaps stab (locking it up) then "un-stabbing" let'in em roll...
    is the faster way to stop when grandma steps of the curb with
    her stroller ?

    What do you do when grandma steps of the curb ?
