technically, if you are under dispatch, you can't use the Line 5 for moving even if you are told you have to leave.
If you are on a 34 hour reset or something like that it's one thing. But not to vacate a shipper or consignee because they tell you you have to move.
How do you think it would really come down on you should a 4 wheeler would hit you as you moved?
I was on EOBR's from March until July of this year. If a shipper/consignee held me up, I stayed there for at least 8 hours at least to do an 8/2 split and leave legally.
The only times I would even consider using a Line 5 move is if I was on my 34 (like I did in Twin Falls ID to go grocery shopping) or when I finished the last of the load and had to bounce home to take my reset.

Well, the way I see it.....EOBR's are just another variation to the way we do business. How many times have we had to "adjust" the way we log as the rules have changed over the years? We still accomplish the same goals, just using differen't rules is all. I see EOBR's as just another adaptation to the business. Everything changes. The trucks most of us started out in had little or no comfort features for the drivers. Now look at today's trucks! Most new drivers today would quit the industry if they had to drive a spring ride cabover with a coffin sleeper and no A/C or power steering. Point is, the industry continues to change, for the good or bad is debatable, but if it's really going to be mandated in July 2015 or whenever I read it was, AND you can get in on it for free by volunteering early, I'm thinking a person might as well get used to it now and at least not have to pay for it.

as I have been reading, none of the systems that are in place now are going to meet the requirements for 2015. If that's the case, you are simply rolling over now to appease the powers that be.

Have you sat and really looked into how this thing is tied into the truck?
It collects speed and engine date via the data connection. It communicates it back to the system. It records everything. Add in the GPS connection to put location on it.
I sat and watched my dispatcher tell me what I was driving, speed, location and where I stopped on more than one occasion.
Several times they would call me or send me a qualcomm message and wake the system up to have it alarm and wake me up because I went over my 10 hour break. -

Yeah, but you could most of that with a qualcomm before. I used to have a qualcomm in my truck before I came to LS, so I know what "they" can see. Honestly, in my opinion, if this were still the 70's I would have a BIG problem with "big brother" having access to my every fart. However, this is 2012 and things are much, much different than they used to be. Maybe I'm just getting old enough that I don't care anymore. In my opinion, if I can't make a decent living running legally than it's time to get out of the business. That being said, I run legal now and no agent is going to "harass" me over a load like I'm sure happens to some company drivers.

Question... how does it or how can it be used to harass the driver? In over 3 decades at this game, NO carrier will tell me when I will move my truck. Period. Even when I was a company driver. We are all adults. If we can't reason thru a problem, then we will go our separate ways. And the shortest period of time I ever worked for someone was 6 years, and have never been terminated. So this "harassment" dog just don't hunt. Not unless you are still having your back side and your nose wiped by your mommy. That doesn't mean I won't try to accomplish something that needs done, but one thing I took from my time in Vietnam, no one can scare or threaten me to do anything. When I became a man, I put away childish things. And Lord help the travel agent who uses the qualcomm to wake me up and get me moving. We have a clear understanding.... that just won't happen, or they can find someone else to pull their freight. And no one has ever tried. I know what I am doing, so let me do my job. And I'll give you another news break..... you have been recorded by your road speed, times you brake, how hard you brake, how and when you shift, etc since the day electronic engines came on the scene in the early 90's. Even in your personal vehicle since air bags came on the scene. What you are doing is recorded in that engine ECM. It can, and has been, used to prosecute drivers. If you think the EOBR or the Qualcomm is the only recent thing to track your rear, you are late to the party. So what if the Qualcomm will be now transferring that data back to the head shed. It is still there, whether it gets transmitted or not and if someone wants that data, they can get it.
I don't, and will not support some supposed "truckers strike" or shutdown over some EOBR mandate. Again, I don't need to resort to childish acts to resolve a problem that I couldn't resolve as an adult. No one forces anyone to do this job, and if they are having issues doing it, then leave. If the time comes where it is just too much to bear, I will park my truck and put it up for sale. Doesn't look like any time soon. I have broken my revenue records each of the last two years using an EOBR. This last year, totally on EOBR, I busted $194,000 in revenue and my net was over $70,000.
