And meanwhile, after that load, the broker posts a load paying $3 a mile, and you just #### the bed because you acted like an ###.

While the broker might have one customer that doesn't pay, or he wants to make 50% commission on those loads, he might have another customer that pays through the nose, and you just screwed yourself out of that....not sure if that's something to be bragging about.

 

So you would deadhead 6 hours to grab a $2.00 per mile load, in effect, knocking that down to $1.50 possibly lower, again, not something worth bragging about I think...

I would rather deadhead than take a load that doesn't pay enough to make a profit. If you want rates to come up then it is up to you as the owner of the truck, to decide whether you will take a cheap load to get to a better freight area, or deadhead. I will deadhead. The only reason rates are cheap is because someone will take the cheap rate. As long as brokers and shippers can get an owner to take a load for a cheap rate, there is no incentive for them to pay a higher rate. Remember, it is the owner who sets the rate, not the broker or shipper. The rate is set when someone takes the load.

 

Rather than call and harass the brokers offering cheap, better to just ignore them.

 

Absolutely, but the OP was suggesting people deadhead 6 hours, which, give or take is 400-500 miles, to pickup a $2.00 per mile load, which completely defeats the purpose, of picking up the $2.00 load to begin with.

Nowhere did I say to take the $1.00 per mile load, but to piss of a broker over one load is extremely short sighted and has absolutely no long term benefit.

 

The problems is, there's quite a few trucking companies that have sharecroppers that are signed into a lease purchase deal where their truck payment and expenses hit once a week. If they don't cover the expenses of the lease payment, and the rest of the bs, their expenses will snowball. They have to move, otherwise they go under. These will pull those cheap loads that you leave behind, as their companies have access to the same brokers.

I always try to direct these to those buy here pay here places for a lease purchase, which gets them from under the thumb of their trucking company. A driver can cut his payments in half, and go to a monthly payment instead of weekly. He doesn't have to jump at the cheap loads nowhere as much. A win-win for all of us.
