I saw one of those staring guys; he rolled down the window and asked why I was staring at him.

 

Last time I was asked that, I told him I was amazed that someone so ugly was allowed to roam the streets....

He walked off in a huff.

 

Ugly truck driver?
No way.

 

a lot of my overnights are spent in a hotel (even though I have a sleeper), the one has large truck parking and is next to a truck stop. I've taken a room chair out and sat on the balcony watching the world go by. decompressing, unwinding, or just relaxing. The times where I do spend the night in the truck, if the spot next to me is open, I'll often be awake until a truck is parked there, I like my bumpers and hood in one piece.

 

They just like to weigh me. Paperwork is always good no matter what.

 

Lol, when my moms cousin pulled a bullrack back in the 70s, the DOT didnt even bother with his paperwork. As they put it, we just assume your guys books are just as full of ######## as your trailer!

 

oh how true that is.....

 

I run into drivers like that from time to time. Last year I was parked at a Flying J somewhere I can't remember and a fellow USA Truck driver parked next to me. He came over to stand on my steps and was making small talk with me and looking around into my truck. He noticed my "fully equipped" apartment and scowled. He told me that I carried too much stuff. My reply was that I'd already weighed the truck out and the entirety of my clothes, appliances, and personal stuff clocked in at less than 300lbs. He told me then that I had misunderstood and that he meant I should travel lightly and never get too comfortable in the truck. He went on to say that in all his years of driving he never took more than a duffel bag, sleeping bag, and a small portable cooler while OTR. When I asked why he told me that it makes it easier to abandon ship when you are ready. I told him I was completely happy with my job and didn't see any reason that I'd have to clean out my truck any time soon. He went on about how he usually never stayed with one company longer than 6 months (one for only 2 months) as thats how long it usually took for them to "piss him off" where he would job hop.

It makes me wonder how many drivers out there have that mentality, to pack as lightly as possible so that you can quit on a moment's notice without worrying about carting stuff around.

Back to the OP....I often sit in the front seat and unwind for awhile. I treat the view like a kid at an aquarium. Its interesting to watch stuff sometimes. Plus, I smoke and I absolutely will not smoke in the sleeper to prevent smell, ash, and smoke from building up inside. So the window is convenient. The only 2 times I immediately close my curtains is when I'm extremely tired, (usually after having driven all night and shutting down about 7-9 in the morning), or when I notice a lot of riff-raff, panhandlers, and solicitors walking about. Them seeing you sitting up front is like an open invitation to come bug you.

 

Some of the truck stops are a three-ring-circus (the J in Salt Lake comes to mind immediately) and are great entertainment.
