I don't think anyone is going to write a bobtail policy without seeing a lease.

 

They sure will, how else do you think people move trucks when they buy them? Get caught without insurance and see what happens. You'll be singing the jail house blues and calling for a load to post bail and pay the impound fees with.

 

Every time I bought a "bobtail" policy I had to give them a copy of my lease agreement. Personally when I buy a piece of equipment I put it on a trailer and haul it home.

 

When I bought my truck, no lease was issued. The truck was insured. The lease did not occur until 2 days later. There is no requirement for a lease on the insurance issue. The insurance company is just trying to kill 2 birds at once and reduce the amount of work they have to do.

 

I think you guys are confusing "Non Trucking Liability" sometimes referred to as "Bobtail" insurance with "Short Term Drive-Away Insurance"

I don't think anyone even writes true bobtail coverage anymore. Bobtail covered the tractor for liability anytime the tractor was without a trailer. It didn't matter if you were operating "under dispatch" or not.

"Non Trucking Liability" covers you anytime you are not under dispatch.

There is a lot of confusion about the terms, and many times they are used interchangeably when in reality they are not the same.

 

Not really. I owned my truck through my own corporation. It was leased to several companies during the time I had it. I never contacted the insurance company to advise them who it was leased to. I am talking about the physical damage insurance on the bobtail. It also had the non trucking liability attached to it. The leases always contained the trucking insurance.

 

First off I don't operate in such an underfunded condition that I would have to call for a load or ask for an advance in order to post bail or pay a fine.

The other thing is I have assets, I would not run a truck without insurance, I stand to lose too much. Personally If I buy something I just drive my Landoll or Detach out and haul it back on the trailer.

And where did I ever say to drive without insurance? I said that no one is going to bind a NTL (non trucking liability) policy without a permanent (over 30 day) lease agreement.

Look at any NTL policy application, They all ask who your truck is leased to.

Now true "Bobtail" insurance is different. It can be bound and it would cover you in the absence of a lease agreement. But try to find true "bobtail" insurance, good luck and if you do it is very expensive. Most agents who claim to write "bobtail" coverage are really writing NTL.
