I had read somewhere (I can't put my finger on it at the moment) that a good knife is an essential piece of gear on the truck. Do you all find you use a knife regularly? Or does it fall into the "rarely use it but really glad I have it when I need it" category? If so, what kind? I have a simple pocket knife and an assortment of standard construction utility knives. Good enough? Any DOT concerns over carrying knives?
I'm trying to put together a small toolbag of essentials that I think I'll need and, of course, the list my recruiter recommends. I want to be prepared but also want to avoid bringing along half of my garage.
There's a good thread in the flatbed forum covering clothes and other gear.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

I use my knife at least once every week, on a specific load that I do in my division. A knife is a very good thing to have with you, you will never know when you might need one.

I use a cheap box cutter knife with the replaceable blades. Cheap because I am good at losing pocketknives. Replaceable blades cause I'm lousy at sharpening them.

I don't use mine much in TCD, but it has come in handy a couple times. I bought mine in the Company store, because its sturdy, is DOT legal, and has the Mav logo on it, so that way it can be classified as a tool and not as a weapon.

I started out with one pocket knife and now have 3 in the truck, they just accumulate some how,
Went to Canada many a time and wasn't bothered by the officials, "I told them what I have" I use one almost every day, mostly to trim my fingernails or to get splinters out.

I never leave the the house with less than two knives, one flash light and a roll of TP.

I have a small knife that I keep in my pocket. A Leatherman multitool that i keep on my belt. A larger pocket knife in the drawer behind my seat in the truck. And a utility knife in my tool box.
When I crossed into Canada they asked if I had any weapons in the truck and my answer was no. Not a single one of those is a weapon. If they searched and asked I would just tell them that they are tools. They did not ask if I had any knives.
A knife is essential in the glass division. We use a lot of fiber rope and tape. You will need a knife to cut the rope and it makes it easier than trying to rip the tape. -
I still have my Old Timer I got when I worked as a lighting tech for Ringling Bros. back in 1979.

I have a knife that I have had for at least 12 years. Wouldnt go anywhere with out it.
