That's true.....but those drivers that settle for that will get paid that! (only god knows why you'd work for that??)

Do a good job O/P and pay your short term dues....it will work out for you. Americans love the second chance!!

I currently make 600 every other week working five 8hr days in the kitchen of a retirement home and lookin for a second job hopping to make 300 every other week flipping burgers. in 2008 I was making between 850-1000 a week and did not sweet my ##### off driving a truck first for us xppress then for Gilster Mary-lee. Gilster does get busier during a slow economy though so that helped and the keep there trucks moving.

Not really for suckers; it depends, job satisfaction is different for different people. Personally, I wouldn't do anything but OTR. I was perfectly happy making average $65K doing OTR; for some that's sucker pay, but for me I was comfortable with it. The key to good pay & not sitting/waiting is to get the endorsements so to qualify for the better jobs.

I was thinking about trying prime but also guys...if that's true about the mileage yall are posting than I can clear about 500..thats working on a start of only about 24,000 a year and I CAN get by on that a few months and than get a raisea bit after training. Im thinking of prime only because they seem to pay 600 during training and only have a 6 week training with a team trainer...than off to 33 or 34 cents. Sound about right to yall bro. Hey I know i'm new but remember its outta town work...7 days a week and in need of a small amount of that check to be perdium for a cost of living increase due to not being at home with the other grocerys. Starting at less than 600 for any job like that regardless of exp is a joke. its 2013 and PRICES have tripled in last 2 decades but we seem to be basing our national JOB SALARY AVERAGES OFF OF THE SAME PAY AS 20 YEARS AGO. I was payin 10 dollars per hour for a laborer and WORKING OUTTA TOWN and HE WAS GETTING 65-70 HRS A WEEK...that's 650 to 700 plus 25 x 7 days perdium. So 650 is not only a fair wage to start at in my book but anything less would be ridiculous. Its also half of what most of you career vet truckers are making. If the mommas boys living at home and the I wont speak of population that helped ruin my construction business would stop settling for less, we wouldn't be talking about this. and for the record, i'm not making 3-400 a week now but scrapimg by at about 5-600 and tired of the yoyo effect with construction. that 3-400 what a recruiter said I would be making for the 4 mon. of team driver training after I got my cdl. Either she was being honest and I wont be getting any miles, or she cant multiply.. Anyway I appreciate all the advice. Any thoughts on prime?

it wasn't prime I was talking about, the 15cent training was about another company that WILL hire felons, This thread was started because of the math that don't add up from the 300 the recruiter mentioned for OTR time in the same sentence she mentioned over 2500 average perdriver at 15cents training pay for mr and 21 cents or whatever for trainer

If you go with Prime, apply for tanker training as a 1st choice and if that doesn't work apply for Prime flatbed. With tanker or flatbed, there's less chance of sitting & waiting for loads/loading/unloading. With tanker experience you can be making over $60K per year within 12-24 months; maybe not with Prime, but can move on to hazmat or fuel or chemical hauling for the better pay.

That's about right; would be .36 cpm split- .15 cpm to you and .21 cpm for the trainer. That's for all dispatched miles, whether driving or sleeping. If it's a coast-to-coast operation, doing for example California or Washington turns, you should do OK until you get a few months experience and then move on if you want. For example, Knoxville to Stockton, CA turn is 4490 miles @ .15 cpm for you = $673.50
That's OK for a new driver who is sleeping for half the trip. Team trucks aren't taking 10 hour breaks in truckstops like solo drivers; they are rolling practically non-stop coast to coast. Usually companies use solo drivers for the shorter runs and teams for the long hauls, otherwise they are wasting or under utilizing resourses. Do some math yourself and average the trip as low as 55 mph excluding fuel/meal stops to get a rough idea how quickly you can turn the trip. I read where a couple of those felony hire team companies sometimes have someone at the other end preloading a trailer for a quicker turnaround; but that's unusual for most companies, but smart business if they occasionally do it.

hey Chinatown, thanks for all the advice and the positive notes. You always seem to be straight up in all yur threads. My dad and my sis drive OTR and both of them made over54000 last year and dad is 36 cents and in his 5th year and home every weekend and my sis stays gone at 41 cents in her 3rd year. The moral of the story is im only looking to get enough to survive through training. I gotta do the time so its gonna happen regardless. My construction was under 30000 last year and I got over 20 yrs in the business....So did my dad with 40 yrs in const. a few years back. Once yur rolling OTR for a while seems every1 I hear about or know is doing well over 40000 except some of those funny people that say they are working for less on these forums.. Well I got some no experience trucker, but lotsa life experience advice for them...stand up straight and quit bending over!!!!You have experience so take what yur worth not any less. If the driver on the C.B. next to you has the same OTR exp. but a much bigger check and a different color truck.....lol. 300 or so a week for an exp OTR driver...wtf? Yur getting it in the rear and with a bag of sand in place of a jar of Vaseline..I learned along time ago if yur exp at a trade, GET WHAT YA NEED UP FRONT CAUSE THEY ALL WILL PROMISE YA THE WORLD BUT 5 YEARS LATER YOU WILL BE GETTIN SCREWED STILL. That goes for all types of work/trades...............China plz note that this isn't info ment towards you, just thought ya might get a chukle outta what I had to say. And thanks again for all your advice

hey china, also wanted to ask you and any1 else wanting to add some thoughts,, If a company recruiter says they checked me out and im good to go for a job, When they bring me up for orientation and such could they run more of a check "so to speak", and decide not to hire me after bussing me there. What im saying is that recruiter said they checked me out and im good to go but my exp with army recruiters is that they sometimes bend the truth to getya started for their quota, This recruiter says im good for a job and says she is also the 1 who does the hiring. So I guess im good to go?

You should be OK as long as she knows about the felony and the rest of the application is correct. It's usually the big mega-carriers that are cold hearted. Try to keep a backup plan; I always kept a little notebook of where I might go if I lost my job, company went bankrupt, etc. Maybe in your case, contact Schneider about their tanker division or R.E. West which I think one of their divisions haul boats from somewhere in Middle TN. Just keep that little notebook handy so you have a ready list of companies & phone numbers & access to online applications. Protect that CDL and you will never be unemployed for over 24 hours and with proper planning will always have a good paying job.
