why are trucks driving in the middle lane(s)?

I had a person try a maneuver similar to the one described above over 25 years ago. Regretfully, he did not live to tell about it!

With regards to trucks traveling in the center lane of a 3 lane interstate: A number of major carriers that conduct their own driving schools referr to the center lane as "The Lane Of Least Resistance" which in my opinion is exactly as implied.













furthermore,I drive with caution and expect the un-expected. However I have a wife, children,grandchildren, a mom and sister. I am just as important to all my family members as anyone in a four wheelec doing idiot acts. I'm not going to leave the road with 40 tons of steel or take any other evassive action that would perhaps endanger the innocent in order to save someone that shall we say committed a serious driving error.
So---BEWARE! If you dance---you just might end up paying the fiddeler!

Arizona is a state that does not hinder the flow of traffic. However, during the so-called oil crisis of the 80's and with the 55 mph, Arizona went along with the violation of peoples rights and hindered traffic by causing traffic to back up into unsafe driving conditions.

People need to be more active in their State Government and they need to address issues with their respective AG on a regular basis. Our AG's have not done their jobs in several decades and it is time for government to start earning their pay. In the case of AG's that allow violations of rights, they need to be disbarred and never allowed to practice law again.

California, Oregon, Washington and Ohio are just some of the worst violators when it comes to speed limits, split speeds, and consumer protection from the greed of corporate America.

Examples:
Why should anyone have to have a two year contract for any kind of service that should never be paid by any contract other than month to month; i.e. cell phone's, telephones, TV, Internet. When we sign a two year contract or any lengthy contract that is placing a noose around our own necks because we have not way out of these illegal contracts other than by penalties, that should never be allowed based on the fact consumers have rights to quality equipment, and customer service.


Citizens should be protesting split speed limits every day until people who work for the tax payers start to pay attention.

Truckers need to write the US AG and complain about the various states that limit lane usage and pose split speeds for trucks and other vehicles.

We should be flooding the US AG and each State AG's mail with complaints every day. Otherwise, nothing will ever be done.

Just a note: England is paying 1 pound 5 pence for 1 liter of petrol. They use primarily clean diesel in all their vehicles. Since diesel is a wast product of each barrel of oil and does not have any real expense of processing like gas does, why is it so high. 4.55 Liters = 1 gal. That makes their fuel about $9.37 per gallon.

Just though you might like to know what we can look forward to in the future because we don't pay attention to our hired government employees.

My sentiments exactly Pappy. The center lane is the safest place for a truck and for those who share the highway. When on the open highway I always keep right, but in a city, I usually tried to stay in the safest lane and like you, always expect the unexpected.

There are several reasons I don't live or work in California, their ridiculous lane restrictions and speed limits are one of them. They have more freeways than spaghetti has noodles, yet trucks can only stay in the right two lanes and can only go 55 mph.
In phoenix, there are no lane restrictions on trucks except the HOV lane during it's hours of operation. The speed limit is 65 mph for everyone except the inner loop - which is 55 for everyone as well. Outside of town the speed limit is 75mph for all vehicles, with a few exceptions on certain highways at certain points. Most trucks stay out of the high speed lane unless they are passing a line of traffic. I don't necessarily think that's such a great idea -being in that lane, but, that's just my opinion.
I don't wonder if California's extreme speed restrictions have more to do with air pollution than speed control/safety.
Also, I remember the days when diesel fuel was 40 or 50 CENTS per GALLON cheaper than gasoline. They charge what they do because they know they can get it. What are we going to do, stop using diesel fuel? I've heard rumors from certain company's management that allegedly, gasoline engines are the wave of the future for trucks.
Remember those diesel cars they built way back when? I think Volkswagen had a Rabbit with a diesel engine - a pure piece of junk. Rated that car right up there with a Chevy Vega or a AMC Gremlin, lol. I wonder what the worst car in the world has ever been? I have to believe it was that Gremlin, but we owned a Vega WAY back when - that car broke down more than it ran. Anyway, I think those diesel cars came out because the price of diesel was so much lower than the price of gasoline.

 

Diesel automobiles, and pick-up trucks in particular, are still selling well because of the better fuel economy. Ask anyone who's into big powered pick-up trucks and they'll agree that diesel gives you the torque you want and, compared to a V-8 (or 10) gasoline engine, much, much better fuel mileage.

I know where you're coming from though. Back in the day those little Rabbit diesels were junk. Also, GM was converting their V-8 gas burners to diesel as fast as they could just to take advantage of the fad. Now that was some junk. The new line-up of diesel engines were designed as diesel burners, from the start, and do much better.

In most cases, the center lane is the safest for trucks to be. I mean you got the morons coming off and on the ramps like they got the right of way. Yes, you should move over if you can but that is not always the case. I remember once in conneticut there was this motorcyle cop comin off the ramp onto the highway, now i had no way to move over--so what does he do? He nearly plows into me--smart move huh--then decides to haul ### down the shoulder to dart over 2 lanes nearly causing another wreck. So, ya in my opinion the center lane is the safest for trucks where everyone is concerned.

 

Not disagreeing, I just remember when they first started building them - much of that junk broke down more than a Chevy Vega (I actually saw one of those things driving down the street today, I was shocked!) .\

I am almost too embarrassed to state that I didn't know that (a waste product of oil) about diesel. Now to reinterate; why is it so high? Another question: Why is it so noisy to run deisel?
