I am going to have to break down and get a computer to keep in the truck. I have been using my phone but it is getting to be a pain in the rear trying to find loads and all that with limited signal. So what would be the best option for a laptop or tablet? I don't want to spend a ton of money on the newest one out there just to have it become outdated in a week. I need something durable, with internet, a word processor, and that can do some games, videos and maybe video phone. Also, do the upcoming EOBR crap:smt093, one that can possibly run different software that might be compatible. I don't know what operating system would be best. I am used to windows, but see that they have tablets with droid OS on them. I have no idea if that is what to get.

Thanks for any help on this!!

You should be able to find most of the answers you are looking for in the electronics forum.

I had a tablet that I almost always used for finding loads and messing around on TTR. But there is just to many things it was not able to do, so a couple of weeks ago I went to Wal-Mart and bought a lap top. I am by no means an expert when it comes to these things, but this is better than my tablet ever thought about being. Just a cheap ($349) Gateway laptop, it can do more things than I have the ability to know how to do. For internet I just use the hotspot on my phone, and I can still send and receive text messages and use the phone as a phone while the hotspot is turned on.

with windows 8 you are screwed. you will need to download a windows 7 skin to prevent suicide. any new computer will run that crap i bet.

I would suggest staying away from eobrs untill we all have no choice. hopefully we can afford to quit when doomsday comes

Windows 8 takes a little getting used to, but once you get it figured out it isn't that bad.

Asking this to 10 people will give you 10 answers. imo I like dell and would recommend a cheap dell. buy form the "business" side of their website and they have pretty good warentees. next day service, any ware. I had the guy meet me in a flying j once when I broke my screen. (I abuse mine)

That being said...You also probably need internet on the road. My recommendation is millenicom.com. They have a 20gb wifi hotspot on the verizion netowork for 70/month. The hotspot gets better signal then your phone. Is area like WV, my verizion phone called it quits, but i stillhad internet from millenicom. It works on the verizion network, but its much cheaper then buying though verizion direct.

All you need is the cheapest laptop from Wal Mart, the cheapest brother scanner/printer/fax from office depot and a verizon mifi. I say verizon not because they are the greatest, customer service sucks, but they have excellent coverage. So less than $500 here for all your needs, plus monthly internet access fees of course.

Millenicom works on the Verizon network and gets better coverage then your iphone with mifi. Same network, just the hotspot device has a better antenna.

I have heard horror stories about windows 8, a laptop just looking for loads and playing some games, not doing anything to demanding, you should be fine with the $350 special available at Walmart. You can buy something more expensive but for what you are planning to use it for it is not necessary. I am not so sure you can utilize your laptop for the EOBR as you have to plug the EOBR into the truck for recording ECM data (if I am not mistaking). Hope this helps!

Thanks to all of you. I guess a laptop would be better than a tablet? I will go check out what they have at walmart. As for the millinum wifi, this is the first I have heard of it. Is it an isp?

Millenicom is the company, basically a useable amount of data for a reasonable price. Yes, it would be classified as an internet service provider.

I'm not sure I could use Verizon at home because I would be using US Cellular's towers, and their coverage area gets them in an uproar about nationwide coverage if you spend too much time off the home network.

I have an aircard I no longer can afford to use that was on the Verizon network, and sometime my US Cellular phone had reception when the aircard didn't and sometimes the other way. The aircard was set up to use with Verizon.
