Hello fellow truckers. I am in the market for a used truck and after a long research I found a truck that fits my needs and budget.
It is a 07 Freightliner Columbia with a Detroit engine and 10 speed automatic. It is owned by Ryder and the mileage is at 660k for 29k Dollars with a 1 year warranty on all major parts. My question is: How is the maintenance on the Ryder trucks, since they are all used as rentals? Should I care to pay $3500 (included at the price) for the one year warranty or just buy without for about 25.5k? My main concern is definitely the maintenance done at this units.
ANY FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED !!!
Thinking of buying a Ryder used truck. Feedback PLEASE

We purchased 5 freightliner trucks from ryder a few years back all with around 4-500k on them and they appeared to be in good shape and ryder was not shy about telling us how great their maintanace program was, Although I can not vouch for the unit you are looking at I can tell you that we will NEVER purchase another used ryder truck.

Thanks for the advise deskdriver. I guess you had a bad experience with their trucks? Any major issue? Would you mind going over the worse ? This is the link for the truck I am looking to buy:

Hard to say I.T., Looking at your numbers then they are selling the truck at market....but the miles are high for that dollar. If that was a select warranty then I'd say no way .....Who administers the warranty? Ryder ? Freightliner? What's the deductible? Per item or per visit? It's 12 mos anything major or selected components?
Point being, look at the front hubs, is there an oil window there or a black solid cap? The cap means unitized hubs ( bearings pressed in ) like a Dodge and that means $1200 a copy.
My experience with Ryder is old. We leased from them in the 90's. They did only what was required to the truck at that time. I found them hard to get along with to the point I had to call the RM / safety guys to make Ryder behave.
I would buy with the warranty ( if not select ) but not at that price. If this were a mid 400's Maverick then yes but it's not. It's a mid 600's Ryder so I like the truck at 25,500 with the warranty, complete service, DOT, all virgin rubber and duals and a new mattress. Make sure the heat and cold work too and no chips in either windshield. Check that dash too. No cracks or loose pieces. Those dashes are all plastic and break up, make him fix it. If he says no..roll on. I say he'll have problems selling that automatic. It's mpg's run about 1/2 to 1 behind a stick and a lot of drivers don't like them. Plus your in Dallas, truck prices are softer there than in Houston.
My 2 cents bud, good luck.12Ponder, OPUS 7 and InternationalTrucker Thank this. -
My company leases tractors through Ryder. I have an 07 Columbia the truck is junk. There maintenance program is crap. They change the oil when they want to. When things break on there trucks they try to find the cheapest fix or find a way not to fix it. My cruise control hasn't worked in 2 years and fuel gauge has been messed up as long. I would go somewhere else maybe Penske might do you better.

Plus my EGR in my truck is always acting up.

Hey Chalupa, thanks for the feedback. The warranty is with ryder and I can buy this truck without any warranties for 22k Dollars.
what you think? Is it possible to buy a decent extended warranty for a used truck from let's say Freightliner?Last edited: Oct 23, 2013

For what your looking at it doesn't seem to be all that bad of a price however as I have stated before in posts - really read the warranty first before going out and getting one. Just make sure you know what is and what isn't covered. It will probably surprise you, what isn't covered under one of those things. I know I thought that a clutch was, so when it went out I was like, this sucks! However I have a warranty that I paid thousands of dollars for so I'm good. Nope, wasnt a covered item because it is an items that "wears" out. Items that "wear" out aren't covered.
For that truck ( and yes, I owned one ) - the engine itself shouldn't give you much trouble however the 10 things bolted onto the engine will probably need to be replaced in the next 100,000 miles. EGR Cooler, Radiator, Turbo actuator, Steering box, Heater Cores, Clutch Fan, and the list goes on. Save your $3,000 for these items. I would probably ask for another $1,500 off the price considering what you can get one at an auction for but I am always trying to get a better deal. Best of luck on the purchase!InternationalTrucker Thanks this.
