I know they'll wake you up in Tn. with a case of bad attitude and threats if you sleep on an on ramp.I've never slept on the off ramp side myself but I've spent many a night on the downhill side.Pisses me off BAD too. They close the pickle parks, truck pull offs and everywhere else...they just want to hold their hand out, grab as much dinero as they can get from you and you keep peddling on down the avenue.

lol wow, already got the conspiracy theories coming out of the woodwork. I mean, break a law and get a fine for it, and its a conspiracy, lol.

I don't know why its illegal, but Im pretty sure that its because of a thing where it just visually looks bad. OK I can't find the right words...but some states (probably many) view them being parked wherever the driver wants as something that is unsightly.

However, I also think that most states won't complain if you are parked out in the boonies. Out here in WY, they have plenty of pull off spots all over for parking and if you havent been out here in the middle of the night, youd be surprised how many trucks they cram in there. They allow trucks to park on the ramps as far as I know as long as its outside of town.

I dont think it should be illegal if its not a high traffic area and it cant be anymore unsightly than a trucker that fell asleep at the wheel and killed another motorist because he couldnt find a place to get some shut-eye.

Because it is illegal. I admit I've done it, but it wasn't illegal when I did.
not too long ago Arkansas passed a law making it illegal to park on off/on ramps. I broke down and had to park on one. Had to leave the truck for a bit, came back about 45 minutes later to find a warning ticket on my windsheild. Had "THIS IS NOT A PAKING SPOT" written in all caps in magic marker across the bottom. Decent parking is getting scarce in some places.

Is illegal federally, according to a story I was told in early 2000, a driver parked alongside the road to read a map. He got fifeteen years in prison!!!
While he was parked a drunk underode the trailer, killing himself and cutting the two children in half that were in the backseat. This is not all the details but it is enough for me. Hey, driver managers, why do you think I would not pull over to read your stupid qualcom messages on the road??????

I missed the conspiracy post you are gushing about...Visual has nothing to do with it.Drunken idiots hitting trucks is part of it,right of way maintenance is also part of it,piss bottles are part of it.As for Wy,you are correct, as for boonies you are incorrect. If its illegal in the state its illegal wherever you are in that state unless otherwise posted. And for the poster wondering about my "pickle park " comment,I really hope you are either just baiting me for a joke or the time you have down as driving is a joke, one or the other.I'll take the bait...It's a rest area,so called a pickle park because its a meeting spot for gays,Hence the "Pickle" part of pickle park.As for the posting about the companies not allowing it,I just thank my lord I've never been broke enough to work for a company that told me where or when or how to park.I used to park on the ramps for a couple of reasons,my convience being one,my truck/trailer always smelled like cow crap ( those cows aren't raised at the deli counter you know)and I didn't want to offend the newbies in their new volvos who were obeying their big company and had there vents open instead of idling with the a/c on being another reason.Would you rather have a bullrack parked beside you at Knoxville in those tight spots or would you rather have seen me a few miles out of town on an ON ramp? The choice ain't yours or mine anymore.

It is an unsafe practice to park on an off ramp or an on ramp. If you research it you will find several cases where people have been killed by running into the back of trucks parked this way. That said, I have done it a few times when I just couldn't find any place else to park. I did not sleep that well on those occasions. If you must park on a ramp I think an on ramp makes more sense because vehicles coming off an expressway are going at a higher rate of speed and braking. I have also seen trucks parked on ramps right in front of no parking signs. Bottom line is we don't have enough truck parking in most states.
